AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) contains fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert and to compare the properties of produced concrete samples. Fresh concrete properties included: slump-flow, t(500), V-funnel time, L-box ratio, segregation ratio, density, and entrained air content. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural and bond strengths, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic elasticity modulus, dynamic Poisson's ratio, and microstructure. Flowability and segregation increased, while bulk density, compressive and flexural strength, dynamic elasticity modulus and ultrasonic velocity slight declined. Times t(500) and V-funnel time, L-box ratio and entrained air changed insignificantly. Considering that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for structural applications.

AB - The cold spray technique was employed in this study to produce pure nickel (Ni) and nickel-Inconel 718 powder deposits on duplex stainless steel substrates. High quality coatings were manufactured using nitrogen as the propellant gas. The coatings exhibited satisfactory Inconel 718 (In718) retention within the Ni matrix due to the highly ductile binder phase necessary for fabrication. The characterization of the coating microstructures was implemented by means of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and microhardness testing. In addition, the erosion resistance of both coatings was evaluated by performing cavitation erosion tests, with the analysis of the eroded surfaces revealing different erosion mechanisms for each coating. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the cold spray technique for use in the production of metal-metal matrix composite coatings and the potential of In718 use in applications which demand enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.

AB - Industrial wastewater contains recalcitrant organic compounds with a very complex chemical structure, built of molecules with long chains of carbon atoms and attached different functional groups. Chemical or biological treatments used for removal of these compounds are being replaced with more efficient non-commercial wastewater treatments. Advanced oxidation processes overcome limitations of conventional methods regarding formation of by-products during degradation of recalcitrant organic compounds. The Fenton process, or use of the Fenton's reagent, has became one of the most utilized processes due to simplicity, economy and accessible amounts of ferrous iron and hydrogen-peroxide, which are used in the process. In specific, the Fenton's reagent is a catalytic-oxidative mixture of these two components. The ferrous iron Fe2+ initiates and catalyzes decomposition of H2O2, resulting in generation of hydroxyl radicals, which are the main radical species in the process able to detoxify several organic pollutants by oxidation. In addition, other mechanisms besides formation of hydroxyl radicals may occur during the Fenton process and participate in degradation of target pollutants. Generally, the treatment efficiency relies upon the physical and chemical properties of target pollutants and the process operating conditions. The main disadvantage of the Fenton process is production of sludge formed by iron hydroxide at certain pH values. An alternative solution for this problem is application of this process in fluidized bed reactors. This paper presents an overview of Fenton and photo-Fenton processes in dispersed systems for removal of different industrial wastewater pollutants. The most important process parameters, required for efficient degradation of recalcitrant organic compounds are also described, such as the catalyst type, pH value, temperature, H2O2 concentration and retention time. Strict control of Fenton process parameters in fluidized bed reactors at desired values can bring these systems to the commercial use.

AB - For the development of the Lost Foam refractory coatings with controlled rheologic properties, the influence of the mechanical activation process on the cordierite-based filler's properties change was examined. First of all, the test referred to the change offiller particles' size and shape, as well as to dispersion ability and stability of the coating suspension. Cordierite was obtained by synthesis in a solid state, out of the mass consisting of kaoline, alumina, quartz, sepiolite. For characterization purposes, the following methods were used: X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, SEM and optical microscopy. Mechanical activation of filler was performed in a vibrating mill. The upper boundary of the grain size was 100% -30 x 10-6 m, the times were (min): 15; 30; 60. The new composition of Lost foam refractory coatings has been developed with a change of the coating production process, as well. These newly synthesized coatings proved to be effective in terms of a positive influence on a surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of aluminium castings. Test results may be useful to have the Lost Foam refractory coatings specified together with other process parameters used for the production of castings according to this casting method.

AB - Using domestic zeolite from Igroš as row material for ceramic samples for application in condition of cavitation erosion. Samples based on talc with 15 % of zeolite, from Igroš, sintered at 1200oC were used in this investigation. The ultrasonic vibratory cavitation set up with stacionary specimen was used. Mass loss was measured and degradation level of the samples using image analysis and Young modulus of elasticity. Obtained results showed good resistance of the sample to the cavitation erosion, which give the possibility for possible future application of ceramic samples based on talc and yeolite in different conditions where cavitation erosion is expected.

AB - In this study the resistance of cordierite and zircon to the cavitation erosion was investigated with the aim of possible spreading their application. Cavitation erosion test was applied using standard ultrasonic vibratory set up with stationary sample. Weight loss and image analysis measurements including morphological analysis of the formed pits were used for monitoring degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. The obtained results were discussed in order to compare and analyze degradation mechanism and the resistance of the investigated materials to cavitation erosion. Cordierite sample underwent less serious degradation, characterized by continual forming of new pits, while zircon degradation progressed by growth and merging of already formed pits.

AB - Pulse-reverse power modes are used in galvanotechniques in order to obtain coatings with better characteristics in terms of gloss, adhesion, tracking sharp edges and uniform distribution of deposits on complex shape objects, compared with the coatings produced by constant current modes. Pulse-reverse modes also allow the use of a higher current density, and thus the production speed of electroplating cells increases. Systems for standard electroplating of copper, silver and gold are optimised by the suitable choice of duration and intensity of the pulses. It is shown that coatings with satisfactory quality can be deposited using higher current density, different modes of pulsed current in a very short period of time, without expensive and often dangerous additives in the electrolyte. Parameters of the model for certain electrochemical systems were determined by modelling and computer simulation, so the system behaviour under different circumstances becomes predictive.

AB - Systematic modification of three structurally different minerals (zeolite, mica, and vermiculite) was carried out with the aim of determining the modification mechanism and exposing the hydrophobic surface that can be used as a sorbent for many organic compounds. Mechanism of modification with cationic surfactant depends strongly on the mineral type. In order to identify the influence of aluminosilicates structural differences on the modification process, adsorption experiments with organic matter and water vapor, supplemented with the DTA/TG analysis, were performed. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) value was 1454 gt 560 gt 28meqkg(-1) for zeolite (clinoptilolite), vermiculite, and mica (muscovite), respectively. Despite its CEC value, vermiculite adsorbed three times the amount of organic matter than did clinoptilolite due to the porous structure of zeolite, which acted to limit the adsorption only on the external exchangeable cations. If the loading amount is equal to the CEC or the external cation exchange capacity for clinoptilolite (ECEC approximate to 10% CEC), the monolayer will form while mineral surface will have hydrophobic character. Only one active center exists at the surface of the clinoptilolite that was identified by DTA curves with a sharp and defined peak around 300 degrees C and by the mass loss at the TG diagrams. Two significant and equal active centers were observed in vermiculite, one for the exchange of the surface cations and the other for the interlayer cations and H2O molecules. Muscovite CEC is negligible, and due to the absence of any other functional groups, the modification of this mineral was impossible.

AB - Mechanical shock of zircon based ceramic induced by cavitation erosion testing was investigated in this study. Several parameters were followed in order to determine level of material degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. Mass loss was taken as a conventional criterion for material degradation, while the level of surface degradation was evaluated by image and thermal imaging analyses. Results show high cavitation resistance of zircon ceramics and their suitability when vigorous cavitation erosion environment is expected.

AB - This paper deals with fractionation of the essential oil from juniper (Juniperus communis L.) berries by hydrodistillation (HD) and simultaneous hydrodistillation and rectification (SHDR) at atmospheric pressure. A rectification column was filled with the NORMAG packing A type and had 36 theoretical stages. In the present study, higher essential oil yield was obtained by HD (1.34 mass %) than by SHDR (1.17 mass %). However, mass fraction distributions of monoterpene hydrocarbons (MHs), oxygenated monoterpenes (OMs) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SHs), observed for the two separation methods, differed from each other. In the SHDR process increased contents of high volatile components (predominantly MHs) were obtained in the initial fractions as well as increased contents of low volatile components (dominantly SHs) in the last fractions. Also, this method increased the separation degree of OMs.

AB - In this paper the ability of three natural zeolites from different localities (Vranjska banja-VB, Igroš-I and Baia Mare-BM deposits) to remove copper has been investigated. These three zeolites were subjected to the elementary analysis as well as XRDP and DTA/TG analysis due to complete characterization. Cation exchange capacity of VB, I and BM zeolites were 150.1, 169.2, and 176.5 meq/100g. The maximum adsorption capacity for the copper adsorption on VB, I and BM-zeolites were 7.75, 8.51, and 11.18 mg/g. Based on the obtained results the mathematical expression that describes correlation between the CEC and copper adsorption capacity has been developed. This linear dependance has been tested with the vast variety of experimental results. According to this expression it is possible to predict the copper adsorption capacity for different zeolites based only on their CEC value.
Kapaciteti katjonske izmene (CEC) ispitivanih zeolita VB, I i BM iznose 150,1, 169,2 i 176,5 meq/100g. .

AB - The possibility of applying fly ash from power plants as a binder in supercapacitor electrodes based on activated carbon was investigated in this research. Based on the mechanical and electrical properties of the electrodes, the optimal ratio between fly ash and AC was determined. Supercapacitor electrodes were prepared in two ways: by pressing and by laser solidification. The preparation method significantly affected physical properties of the electrodes as well as the electrochemical behavior in supercapacitor setup. The electrodes were electrochemically tested by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods and cyclic voltammetry. In order to improve the estimation of supercapacitor parameters, mathematical model that perfectly describes the behavior of investigated electrodes in aqueous solution of sodium nitrate was developed. The best results were obtained with laser-solidified electrode in 1M aqueous solution of NaNO3. Specific capacitance of 105 F/g, serial resistance of 0.57 Omega and self-discharge resistance of 95 Omega were achieved. Stability at high number of cycles proved to be very good. After 2000 cycles of CV at scan rate of 100 mV/s, specific capacitance fell by only 4.6 %.

AB - Coating materials are widely used in refractory lining to prevent different deleterious effects such are reactions on the mold-metal contact surface, abrasion from liquid metal or alloy, gasses, slags, and other materials in contact with the coating. In this paper, behavior of cordierite based coating exposed to the cavitation erosion was investigated. Cordierite samples sintered at 1200 and 1400 degrees C were used for the tests. Mass loss, level of surface degradation obtained using image analysis and thermal imaging analysis were applied for the cavitation erosion evaluation. Results showed that the cordierite samples can be successfully used in conditions where the cavitation resistance is required.

AB - BACKGROUNDMicrowave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) has widely been used to isolate essential oil from various plant materials, but it has not been applied yet to extract essential oil from juniper berries. The main goals of the present work were to establish a model describing the extraction kinetics and the chemical composition of the essential oil obtained. RESULTSA lower final essential oil yield from juniper berries was obtained by MAHD than by conventional hydrodistillation (HD). No significant differences in chemical compositions of the essential oils extracted by the two techniques were observed. The mechanism of both processes was the same and included fast (washing) and slow (diffusion) distillation of essential oil that occurred simultaneously. CONCLUSIONThe kinetic model involving simultaneous washing and diffusion of essential oil was verified for various plant materials (areal parts of savory and thyme, fennel seeds and juniper berries) for both MAHD and HD that indicated its general importance. For the first time, the kinetic models of MAHD and HD were compared. Knowledge of the juniper berry essential oil yield and the extraction kinetics is of importance from the technological and economics points of view, while the chemical composition determines its use.

AB - The analized material was high alumina low cement castable sintered at three different temperatures. Influence of initial material anisotropy on the thermal shock resistance as well as changes of anisotropy level during the thermal shock were studied. Water quench test was used as an experimental method for the thermal stability testing. Surface anisotropy was analysed by image analysis and structural anisotropy using ultrasonic measurements. The results pointed out that the highest homogeinity and the lowest surface and structural anisotropy was for the samples sintered at 1600 degrees C. Surface anistoropy had prevailing infuence on behavior of material during the thermal shock, but the structural anisotropy should not be neglected.

AB - This study presents the results of an investigation of high-temperature materials refractory coatings based on different refractory fillers including talc, cordierite, zircon and mullite applied in the lost-foam casting process. Design and optimization of a coating composition with controlled rheological properties and synthesis were achieved by applying different coating components, suspension agents and fillers and by altering the coating-production procedure. A morphological and microstructural analysis of the fillers was carried out with scanning electron microscopy. An X-ray diffraction analysis was applied to determine and monitor the phase-composition changes of the refractory fillers. The particle size and shape were assessed with the PC software application package OZARIA 2.5. To assess the effects of the applications of individual refractory coatings, a detailed investigation of the structural and mechanical properties of the mouldings obtained was performed. Highlight was placed on revealing and analyzing surface and volume defects present on the mouldings. Radiographic moulding tests were carried out with an X-ray device, SAIFORT type-S200. The attained results are essential for the synthesis of the refractory coatings based on high-temperature fillers and their applications in the lost-foam casting process for manufacturing the mouldings with in-advance-set properties.

Design and optimization of the coatings composition with controlled, rheological properties included, and consequently synthesis were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and fillers and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Morphologic and microstructural analysis of fillers was carried out by means of scanning electronic microscope. X-ray diffraction analysis by means of X-ray diffractometer was applied in determination and monitoring the phase composition changes of the refractory fillers. An analysis of the particle size and shape was carried out by means of the PC software application package OZARIA 2.5. To assess the effects of application of individual refractory coatings, a detailed investigation of structural and mechanical properties of the moldings obtained was performed. AB - Mica and talc have wide areas of application as a raw material in a number of industrial branches. Mechanically activated mica has specific applications such as: capacitors, insulators, and pearlescent pigments. Talc is widely used as either a basic raw material or as filler. This paper presents a comparative analysis of mechanically activated samples of mica and talc in ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator "Retsch ZM-1". The following mechano-activator parameters were variable: number of rotor revolutions (rpm); sieve mesh size (mu m); current intensity (A). In addition, the following parameters were monitored: duration of mechanical activation, t (min); circumferential rotor speed, v (m/s); capacity of mechano-activator, Q (kg/h); and specific energy consumption, W-e (kW h/t). It was observed that effect of mechanical activation of mica and talc increased with an increase of the load and rotor revolution of ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator. Both mica and talc were successfully treated by mechanical activation procedure. In the processing of mica, mechanical activation is suggested to be applied as a post-treatment, and in the talc processing as a pre-treatment, as the high quality talc is obtained by means of hydrometallurgical concentration method.

AB - The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

AB - In this study, new refractory coatings based on synthesized cordierite for the casting applications were developed. The investigation included starting raw materials characterization, synthesis of the cordierite, design of the refractory coating as final product, and its application testing. The obtained results pointed out that coating suspension sediment stability was crucial quality parameter. Design and optimization of the coatings composition, with controlled rheological properties included, were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Cordierite, used as filler, was obtained by means of synthesis in the solid-state reaction on the basis of talc, kaolin, and alumina. The investigation showed that the application of these particular types of water/alcohol-based coatings has positive influence on surface quality and structural and mechanical properties of the castings of aluminum alloys obtained by casting into sand molds by means of evaporable models method, that is, evaporate pattern casting process.

AB - The purpose of this study was to investigate behavior and degradation level of refractory concrete sintered at different temperatures during the thermal stability testing. Alumina based low cement castable was synthesized, cured, and then sintered at 1100, 1300, and 1600 degrees C with dwell time of 3 h. Prepared samples were subjected to the water quench test. Behavior of the refractory concrete and determination of surface and internal degradation level during the testing were monitored by ultrasonic measurements and image analysis. Overall material degradation was determined by measuring the strength degradation of samples using the standard laboratory procedure. The samples sintered at 1300 degrees C showed the best behavior under thermal shock, since they withstood 110 cycles of water quench without breaking. It was evident that during the thermal shock, surface and interior of the samples sintered at 1600 degrees C behave differently compared with those sintered at 1100 and 1300 degrees C.

AB - The purpose of this study was to investigate possible application of refractory concrete in conditions of cavitation effect where the metal materials are usually applied. Also, influence of different sintering temperatures on cavitation resistance of refractory concrete was analyzed. As the refractory concrete, low cement castable was synthesized, cured, and then sintered at three different temperatures: 1100, 1300, and 1600 degrees C. Mass loss and surface degradation of investigated samples were monitored for 3 h during the exposure to the cavitation erosion. The results show that the samples sintered at 1100 degrees C are not suitable for application in conditions of cavitation since they were significantly destroyed only after 30 min of testing. On the other side, the samples sintered at 1300 and 1600 degrees C exhibited very good cavitation resistance, since they were stable during 360 min of cavitation testing with the damage level below 30% compared to the original surface.

AB - Various possibilities for developing new mullite-based refractory linings that can be applied in a casting process were investigated and are presented in this paper. An optimization of the refractory-lining composition design with the controlled rheological properties was achieved by applying different lining components and altering the lining-production procedure. Mullite was used as a high-temperature filler. A mullite sample was tested with the following methods: X-ray diffraction analysis, differential thermal analysis and scanning-electron microscopy. The particle shape and particle size were analyzed with the program package for an image analysis called OZARIA 2.5. It was proved that an application of this type of lining has a positive effect on the surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of Fe-C alloys obtained by casting into sand molds, according to the method of expandable patterns (the EPC casting process).
