AB - Copper matrix composites reinforced with ZrB2 particles were produced in two ways: by hot pressing (HP) and laser-sintering process. Powder mixture Cu-Zr-B was mechanically alloyed before densification processes. Variations in the microstructure of treated samples obtained during cavitation test were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cavitation erosion resistance was investigated with the standard test method for cavitation erosion using vibratory apparatus. Changes in mechanical alloying duration show a strong influence on cavitation erosion resistance of Cu-ZrB2 composites regardless the number of reinforcements. Laser-sintered samples show better cavitation erosion resistance than hot-pressed samples.

AB - In this work, the new biodegradable blend films composed of natural polymer pectin and synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone were obtained through casting process. The concentration of glycerol in all formulations was constant (2% v/v), while the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone varied from 20 to 60% by mass of pectin. The molecular interactions between two components were elucidated by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, while functional properties of these films were carried out by determination of puncture resistance, tensile strength, thermal stability, water vapor barrier, wettability and printability. The blending of pectin with PVP led to an improvement of mechanical resistance, barrier properties and hydrophobicity of these films for 57%, 58 and 24%, respectively, remaining adequate thermal stability. Since pectin and PVP are nontoxic, food-grade and biodegradable materials, this research present an ecosustainable approach to provide films with satisfied physical properties for use as packaging material of non-food products, such as water-treatment products (detergents, biocides, agrochemical compounds).

AB - The influence of corrosion on the surface appearance and microstructure of particulate ZA27/SiCp composites was examined after 30 d immersion in a sodium chloride solution with the access of atmospheric oxygen. The composites with different contents of SiC micro-particles were synthesized via compo casting. Microstructural studies by means of optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that corrosion occurred in the composite matrices, preferentially in regions of the. phase, rich in zinc. The corrosion processes did not affect the silicon carbide particles incorporated in the matrix alloy. According to the results of electrochemical polarization measurements, an increase in the content of SiC particles in the composite matrice has led to the lower corrosion resistance in the composites.

AB - The Cu-7vol.%ZrB2 alloy examined in this study was consolidated via powder metallurgy (PM) processing by combining mechanical alloying and hot pressing. Powder mixture with composition: 94.78 wt.% copper, 4.1 wt.% zirconium, and 1.12 wt.% boron was used as a starting material. Mechanical alloying of powder mixture was performed at various times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 h. Structural changes that occur in the samples of copper alloy with 7vol.%ZrB2 after milling and during hot pressing process were studied with the use of X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) was applied to examine the morphological properties and elemental analysis of the hot-pressed samples as a function of milling times. Also, hardness of the Cu-7vol.%ZrB2 alloy was investigated, and the results showed that hardness of the samples increased as the milling time increased. The compressive properties at room temperature are correlated to the corresponding hardness results. Distribution of ZrB2 particles and presence of agglomerates in the Cu matrix directly depend on the milling time and show strong influence on compressive properties and fracture of Cu7vol.%ZrB2 alloy.

AB - The wetting process on the nano-scale, as an initial and essential step in liquid metal/ceramic joining, is discussed here. Thanks to recent breakthroughs in experimental techniques with nanometre resolution, questions posed several decades ago are being looked at again. Despite recorded facts on acting mechanisms, the published results are very diverse due to the variety of materials and their structures, as well as experimental conditions, so the modeling is inevitable for process development and to overcome the multi-scale influencing parameters issues. A nano-scale wetting model have been proposed and tested on results obtained in a liquid-metal/SiC system that was published in the literature.

AB - The influence of corrosion on the microstructure of thixoformed and heat-treated ZA27 alloys was investigated. The microstructure of ZA27 alloy was affected by heat treatment. The process of electrochemical corrosion occurs in both ZA27 alloys through the area of eta phase. According to the results of immersion test and electrochemical measurements, the corrosion rate of the thixoformed ZA27 alloy is at least 50% lower than that of the thixoformed and thermally processed alloy. This indicates the unfavourable influence of applied heat treatment (T4 regime) on the corrosion resistance of the thixoformed ZA27 alloy.
