AB - Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/clay nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared by suspension polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of two different organoclays (Cloisite 30B, Cloisite 15A) with clay loading ranged from 0.5 to 5 wt%. Increase in molecular weight of the PMMA matrix with addition of the clay was revealed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and intrinsic viscosity measurements. As confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the NCs had an intercalated structure. The organoclays-MMA/PMMA compatibility was investigated by swelling tests and solubility parameter approach. Rheological behavior of PMMA NCs in molten state was analyzed through construction of master curves of complex viscosity, storage, and loss modulus by applying the time-temperature superposition procedure. Melt rheology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV/Vis spectroscopy results confirmed higher extent of clay dispersion in the NCs with Cloisite 30B. Compared to pure PMMA, all these NCs show increase of glass transition temperature as measured by DSC and improved thermal stability determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus of the NCs was higher by incorporation of clay into the PMMA matrix, increasing as the amount of clay increased and that their mechanical performance was significantly enhanced.

AB - This study is aimed to evaluate the possibility of lemon peel, as an agro-industrial waste, to remove Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+ from single aqueous solutions and mining wastewater. For this purpose, the influence of various parameters: sorption time, initial pH solution, initial metal ion concentration and a dose of sorbent on the sorption process were studied in batch experiments. The experimental equilibrium data have been analysed utilizing linearized forms of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The Langmuir isotherm provided the best theoretical correlation of the experimental equilibrium data for Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+, with the maximum sorption capacities of 4.40, 5.03 and 4.52 mg g(-1), respectively. The percentage of targeted ions removal from single aqueous solutions was 92.9 % (Zn2+), 84.5 % (Fe2+) and 78.2 % (Mn2+). Regarding the sorption capability of lemon peel in mining wastewater, the maximum removal of Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+ from mining wastewater was 49.62, 33.97 and 9.11 %, respectively. In addition, the potential reusability of the lemon peel as sorbent was investigated through desorption study in 0.1M of CH3COO4, HCl and HNO3 solution. The highest rate of desorption was achieved in 0.1 M HCl solution, reached a value of 55.19 % for Mn2+ and 37.24 % for Zn2+, while for Fe2+ the highest value of 25.82 % was achieved in 0.1M HNO3 solution.

AB - Fundamental research of inorganic polymers prepared from available aluminosilicate precursors represent an innovative class of materials characterized by low energy consumption for production. This is just one of the reasons why their use is focused in protecting the environment for removing of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The concentration of hydroxide as activator solution plays an important role in the geopolymerization process. The present study examined the use of geopolymer materials, obtained in reaction of geopolymerizations of metakaolin as precursor activated with NaOH concentration 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 mol/dm(3) for removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions. The structure and properties of the obtained geopolymer samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and diffuse reflection infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). To investigate the surface charge of geopolymers the zeta potential measurements were performed. Batch adsorption experiments conducted at room temperature (23 +/- 1 degrees C) showed that the adsorption pattern followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum removal of cadmium obtained from batch studies was 84.1% for GP6M at pH approximate to 6.7. The results generally showed that geopolymer samples could be considered as a potential adsorbent for cadmium removal from aqueous solutions.

AB - The study of an effect of iron doping on the structural, microstructural and mechanical properties of sintered iron-doped mullite is presented. The results of phase composition, performed in detail by Mossbauer spectroscopy and XRD analysis, revealed that all added iron was inside the mullite lattice forming the single phase up to 12% by weight of Fe2O3 and 1300 degrees C. Samples, which were processed at 1550 degrees C, contained secondary phases, hematite or magnetite, regardless of the amount of added iron. Furthermore, the addition of iron decreases the values of relative linear shrinkage comparing to the values of undoped one (similar to 18%) while the densities of the sintered samples rise as well as their values of microhardness. Even though the density values were not too high (90 TD%), the obtained values of microhardness were excellent, 1634 HV0.1 for maximum iron content due to the characteristic mullite microstructure.

AB - Comprehensive study on effect of YAG amount on densification, creep resistance and room-temperature mechanical properties of Al2O3-YAG composite pressureless sintered at 1600 degrees C was conducted. The main goal was to optimize the amount of YAG in order to fabricate a composite with improved creep resistance and sufficiently good room-temperature mechanical properties. The composite was made by mixing a commercially available Al2O3 powder with fine YAG powder obtained by glycine-nitrate combustion synthesis starting from aluminum nitrate and yttrium nitrate. Increased driving force for sintering of fine YAG powder allowed fabrication of dense Al2O3-YAG composite with up to 30 vol% YAG. The presence of YAG was found to be very effective in improving creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite. Large Y3+ ions blocked diffusion along Al2O3 grain boundaries, reduced diffusivity and therefore enhanced creep resistance of Al2O3-YAG composite which continuously increased as the YAG amount increased. The presence of YAG was also found to improve mechanical properties such as hardness and elastic modulus. The improvement of these properties was ascribed to increased density of Al(2)O(3)YAG composites owing to high sintering activity of YAG powder. While fracture strength of the composite can be as high as that of monolithic Al2O3, fracture toughness of composite decreased continuously as the YAG content increased. The decrease was ascribed to transgranular fracture of both YAG and Al2O3 grains in samples containing larger amounts of YAG. The proper balance between fracture toughness and creep resistance was found in composite containing 18 vol% YAG which had considerably improved creep resistance accompanied by a relatively small decrease in fracture toughness.

AB - Self-compacting concrete (SCC) contains fine mineral fillers such as limestone powder. The idea of this study was to partially replace limestone with waste sulfur since it is hydrophobic, insoluble in water and therefore chemically inert and to compare the properties of produced concrete samples. Fresh concrete properties included: slump-flow, t(500), V-funnel time, L-box ratio, segregation ratio, density, and entrained air content. Hardened concrete was tested for compressive, flexural and bond strengths, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic elasticity modulus, dynamic Poisson's ratio, and microstructure. Flowability and segregation increased, while bulk density, compressive and flexural strength, dynamic elasticity modulus and ultrasonic velocity slight declined. Times t(500) and V-funnel time, L-box ratio and entrained air changed insignificantly. Considering that all properties should remain or improve in case of waste valorization and the criteria should set to satisfy requirements for SCC, this study proved that all mixtures can be used for structural applications.

AB - Ab initio data mining approach has been used in order to investigate B6O system and discover new possible modifications, besides experimentally known R-3m (alpha-B6O) structure and theoretically predicted Cmcm (beta-B6O) structure. DFT calculations were performed by two different functionals, LDA and PBE. In this work, we focus on the structure, mechanical, and electronic properties of the experimentally known alpha-B6O structure and newly predicted modifications with the B6O stoichiometry. Moreover, mechanical properties including elastic constants, bulk, shear and elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, Pugh's criterion, and hardness are given for the investigated modifications of B6O. In particular, we have investigated the influence of the high pressure on the electronic and mechanical properties. Results of our study provide more insight in the B6O superhard material and open new possibilities for various device applications.

AB - The structural and morphological properties of iron-doped mullite powders are the subject of the present study. The powders of undoped and iron-doped mullite in the composition range of 3-15 wt% Fe2O3 were synthesized by a combination of sol-gel and combustion methods. The excess of water and urea were introduced in reaction solutions to enhance the copolymerization of aluminum and silicon species. The results of structural characterization revealed that the synthesized mullite powders were amorphous of a hybrid type. The specific surface area of the undoped mullite powder was 262 m(2) g(-1) with a maximum pore radius (d(p)) of 2 nm classifying it into mesoporous materials. The addition of iron has reduced the specific surface area, while the pore size value remained the same except for the sample with 3 wt% Fe2O3 (S-BET = 278 m(2) g(-1); d(p) = 3 nm). The presence of iron caused lowering the temperature of liquid phase formation, while present urea combusted providing the increase of the temperature locally that caused the sintering and formation of agglomerates of smaller particles. However, the results of the particle size analysis are not straightforward. The values of mean volume diameter (D[3,4]) indicated that the particle size increased to 6 wt% Fe2O3 (123.6 mu m), and then decreased and for the sample with 12 wt% Fe2O3, it was equal to 96.6 mu m. Thus, the added iron contributed to the more uniform particle size distribution. The SEM analysis has also shown the coarse powder particles consisted of the coalesced smaller particles.

AB - The cold spray technique was employed in this study to produce pure nickel (Ni) and nickel-Inconel 718 powder deposits on duplex stainless steel substrates. High quality coatings were manufactured using nitrogen as the propellant gas. The coatings exhibited satisfactory Inconel 718 (In718) retention within the Ni matrix due to the highly ductile binder phase necessary for fabrication. The characterization of the coating microstructures was implemented by means of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and microhardness testing. In addition, the erosion resistance of both coatings was evaluated by performing cavitation erosion tests, with the analysis of the eroded surfaces revealing different erosion mechanisms for each coating. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the cold spray technique for use in the production of metal-metal matrix composite coatings and the potential of In718 use in applications which demand enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.

The effects of solution pH, adsorption time, metal ion concentration and dose of adsorbent on sorption were studied in batch experiments. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was evaluated to be 13.2 mg/g at optimum contact time of 15 min. The maximum removal of copper ions from mining-wastewater at natural pH (pH3) was 89%, indicating that lemon peel could be employed as an effective low-cost adsorbent for removal of copper ions from wastewater at acidic conditions.

AB - In this work an attempt was made to produce epoxy coating doped with ceria (CeO2) and/or zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles, in single step electrophoretric deposition process. Deposition was carried out on AA6060 cataforetically from epoxy resin suspension containing synthesized stable aqueous colloidal dispersions (sols) of CeO2 and ZrO2. The influence of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adhesion measurements, while their corrosion stability during immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solution was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All ceria and/or zirconia containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating, while between doped epoxy coatings one with CeO2/ZrO2 exhhibited the greatest values of charge-transfer resistance due to synergetic effect of both types of added nanoparticles.

AB - In the present study the commercial multifunctional fatty acid polyamidoamine (PAA) was for the first time simultaneously applied as a curing agent and clay modifier for epoxy/clay nanocomposites (NC) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The montmorillonite (Cloisite (R) Na+) was modified with different quantities of partially and fully protonated polyamidoamine. The NCs with 0.5 wt% novel organoclay were prepared by solution intercalation method. The major aims of this paper are investigations of the effects of the composition of PAA modified clays on structure, mechanical, barrier properties and corrosion stability on steel substrates of NCs were studied. The thermogravimetric, flame photometry and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the efficient modification of clay surface with polyamidoamine, predominantly located within layers. The NCs exhibited an intercalated/exfoliated morphology and the presence of free amino groups and increased content of modifier facilitated dispersion of clay particles within the polymer matrix, as shown by electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM). Under an optimized loading of PAA (molar quantity of total amino groups per clay cation exchange capacity of 1.75), the layers in stacks were separated by 5.0 nm and high number of individual layers was present in NC. Clay modified by PAA with free amino groups showed increased storage modulus in the rubbery state, glass transition temperature of NCs, while dumping factor was decreased. The tensile test confirmed that introduction of flexible modifier on the epoxy/clay interface lead to increase in the ultimate tensile strenght and elongation at break by 31% and toughness up to 83%. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved.

abstract = "In the present study the commercial multifunctional fatty acid polyamidoamine (PAA) was for the first time simultaneously applied as a curing agent and clay modifier for epoxy/clay nanocomposites (NC) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved.",

AB - Continuous development of new technologies leads to increasing pollution of water, thus creating the need for new materials that could be used in the processes of its purification. Therefore, adsorbents prepared from agricultural waste, resins, silica gels, zeolites, clays, flying ash, aluminosilicates and other materials are being investigated as potential sorbents. Recently, research has focused on improving the adsorption capacity by modifying the material by binding or impregnating inorganic and organic molecules on the surface. In this paper, the kaolinite modification with amino acids, histidine and cysteine, was performed to improve the efficiency of adsorption of cadmium ion. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of raw and modified kaolinite was determined by titration with methylene blue. The influence of operating parameters, such as adsorption time, pH value of the solution, initial metal concentration and temperature, on the capacity and adsorption efficiency were examined. Better agreement of experimental results with Freundlich's adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetics model suggest that the adsorption of cadmium ions on the investigated adsorbents takes place by chemisorption mechanism. The change of Gibbs free energy has a negative value for both adsorbents, which shows that the adsorption process is spontaneous. The efficacy of cadmium removal from the aqueous solution onto histidine-modified kaolinite increased from 78.6% to 91.8%.

AB - Composites are materials that reach many users and therefore, it is necessary to correlate the properties of every component on the behaviour of the material. Alumina is used as reinforcement with the aim of improving hardness. It was proven that the hardness depends on the crystal structure of the reinforcement. As the hardness is related to cavitation resistance, the influence of different reinforcements on the composite cavitation resistance was studied. Alumina and iron(III) oxide doped alumina particles were prepared by the sol-gel technique, starting from soluble salts of both elements. The gels were calcined at three different temperatures: 700, 800 and 900 degrees C. Poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, was used as the polymer matrix reinforced with alumina particles. The reinforcement content of all the samples was 3 wt %. Cavitation erosion of the samples was measured using a standard ultrasonic vibratory setup with a stationary sample. The cavitation resistance of the samples was studied using the classical mass loss method and the surface defects resulting from cavitation were analyzed. The morphologies of the defects after 1 h of cavitation erosion were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The images were characterized using the image analysis procedure. The results showed that the alumina crystal structure resulting at different calcination temperatures influences the defect morphology, cavitation resistance and the hardness of the composites.

AB - Natural filtration material tuff (T) was modified by coating with nano-sized magnetite. The grain fraction of 0.6-1.9 mm was submitted to hydrothermal synthesis of magnetite. Thus formed magnetite modified tuff (MMT) was characterized in terms of Fe-content, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, SEM, zeta potential-pH analyses and adsorption behavior towards phosphates/arsenates in batch and column conditions. Elemental analysis showed that 36.54 mg g(-1) of magnetite was attached to the porous tuff grains. This modification changed pore structure and specific surface area. An increase of cca 35% in Sp value was obtained. Batch experiments proved that MMT was 4-5 times more efficient in removal of phosphates/ arsenates than non-modified T. The maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation were 0.45 and 1.91 mg g(-1), while those for arsenate were 0.551 m g(-1) and 2.36 mg g(-1) for T and MMT, respectively. The intra-particle diffusion model was the most suited for describing the adsorption process of phosphate and arsenate onto MMT. Fixed-bed column data corroborated batch results, i.e. MMT was 6 times superior in contaminant adsorption than T. Modification with magnetite improved T potential for usage in water treatment applications: its filtration ability remained unchanged, while adsorption capacity for phosphates/arsenates removal was improved.

AB - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by self-propagating room temperature method and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200 degrees C for 15 min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-delta and Ce1-xPrxO2-delta (x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200 degrees C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB - The microstructure variation and oxidation behavior of a hot-rolled and quenched Ti-24Al-11Nb (at%) intermetallic alloy with and without protective Ni-20Cr (at%) coating were studied in the air at a cyclic annealing temperature of 600 °C and 900 °C. The phase transformations monitored up to 120 h of alloy oxidation and oxidation products were examined using different experimental techniques. The oxidation kinetics was determined by recording the mass gain vs. time data and oxidation activation energy was evaluated. It was found that the annealing temperature and deposited coating significantly affect the scale formation and growth. The alloy showed better oxidation resistance at 600 °C, irrespective of the protective coating application. The higher temperature promoted the formation of thicker and multi-layered scale predominantly composed of Nb-doped TiO2 and Al2O3 oxides, which cracked and spalled causing oxidation rate for an order of magnitude higher than that at 600 °C. The presence of AlN decelerated the oxide scale growth, which obeyed a parabolic rate law. It was also noted that a two-phase α2+β microstructure changed to a greater extent. With increasing temperature, the α2→β phase transformation occurred more intensive and new α2′′ and O-Ti2AlNb phase appeared. The Ni-20Cr coating reduced the oxidation rate at both temperatures and improved the scale-spallation resistance. The compact Cr2O3 layer formed on the coated alloy led to the preferential Al2O3 formation, increasing its amount in mixture with Nb-enriched TiO2 oxide. Thin TiN layer detected beneath the oxide scale also supported the formation of slow-growing Al2O3, leading to a decrease in the oxidation rate. The external scale suppression contributed to the greater diffusion zone enrichment, resulting in the faster O-Ti2AlNb formation. The experimentally observed O-Ti2AlNb formation was confirmed by ab initio modeling. Furthermore, additional structures were predicted and studied using first-principles calculations in the O-Ti2AlNb compound. © 2018

AB - The aim of this paper is to present image analysis as a useful technique for fast, reliable and non-destructive detection of dimensional and structural changes in polymers. The possibility of applying image analysis was demonstrated in the case of solvent-induced crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) containers filled with commonly used organic solvents: chlorobenzene, isophorone, xylene, Espesol, Shellsol A 100, Solvesso 150, propylene glycol, glycerin and water and subjected to the storage stability test at 54 degrees C for 14 days (CIPAC 1-MT 46.1.3). In addition, the obtained results were analyzed using one-step analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with the Duncan's statistical test (p lt 0.05). According to the achieved results, three main impacts of the presented paper could be distinguished: 1) dimensional and transparency changes could be precisely followed by image analysis in both following cases: for small changes in water, as well as for significant ones in chlorobenzene; 2) a correlation between the changes in the degree of crystallinity and transparency could be obtained without the continuous material testing by DSC; 3) image analysis is potentially applicable for assessment of other crystalline polymers.

AB - Porous materials made of commercial tungsten carbide (WC) with the addition of thermally obtained tungsten silicides (WSi2 and W5Si3) were made. The main research's contribution is firstly finding optimal conditions for synthesis tungsten silicides from elementary powders, and lately obtaining porous materials with excellent cavitation resistance. A phase transformation during synthesis of silicides was studied by changing temperature and time of heating. Obtained silicides were added to WC in different mass percentages. Mixtures were spark plasma sintered. Nanoindentation tests were performed on sintered samples, as well as cavitation erosion testing accompanied by measuring of mass changes and the profilometry measurements to scan the surface. Microstructure and morphology were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while porosity percentages based on SEM images were calculated by computer software QWin.

AB - The major aims of this paper are the investigation of the effects of the mixing procedure and the montmorillonite (Mt) surface modification on the structure (optical microscopy, XRD, TEM, SEM), rheological, mechanical properties (DMA, tensile test) and corrosion stability (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) of clay mineral/epoxy nanocomposite (CPN). Two series of CPN samples were prepared based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and polyamidoamine curing agent with three organophilic Mt and sodium-montmorillonite (1 wt%). Mt were mixed with DGEBA solution in the powder (direct mixing) and in the form of dispersions, preswollen in a commercial coating thinner (solution intercalation). The commercial Mt (Cloisite 30B) modified by quaternary alkylammonium ions bearing hydroxyl groups and especially Mt functionalized by primary (HDA(+)-Mt) alkylammonium ions, at loadings close to cation exchange capacity (CRC), were significantly swollen by thinner and further uniformly dispersed into CPN. Meanwhile, low gel volumes in thinner were found for more hydrophobic Mt (Cloisite 15A). The compatibility of Mt with solvents was well described by solubility and Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. In contrast to the direct incorporation of Mt powders in CPN, swelling enhanced intercalation of epoxy matrix into Mt, and for HDA(+)-Mt based CPN interlayer spacing reached 4.4 nm. The usage of HDA(+)-Mt organoclay and solution intercalation procedure provided the highest enhancement in rheological parameters (G', G", of Mt/epoxy dispersions and glassy storage modulus, Young's modulus and barrier properties of cured CPN.

AB - Using domestic zeolite from Igroš as row material for ceramic samples for application in condition of cavitation erosion. Samples based on talc with 15 % of zeolite, from Igroš, sintered at 1200oC were used in this investigation. The ultrasonic vibratory cavitation set up with stacionary specimen was used. Mass loss was measured and degradation level of the samples using image analysis and Young modulus of elasticity. Obtained results showed good resistance of the sample to the cavitation erosion, which give the possibility for possible future application of ceramic samples based on talc and yeolite in different conditions where cavitation erosion is expected.

AB - Composite films having the UV cured Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate)/TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and the ferrous oxide doped alumina (Al2O3 Fe) based particles were prepared and subjected to cavitation. In order to improve the mechanical and adhesion properties of composites, four different surface modifications of filler particles were performed: 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO), vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane (VTMOEO), (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and biodiesel (BD). Composite films were made with 0.5,1.5, and 3 wt.% of ferrous oxide doped alumina particles with each of the mentioned surface modifications. Composite films were prepared on brass substrates and exposed to cavitation erosion. The erosion was monitored using the mass loss while image analysis was used to observe surface defects. The composite film reinforced with Al2O3 Fe having VTMOEO as a surface modifier was the most resistant one in terms of mass loss, as well as the level of surface destruction. Results were compared to the same polymer matrix film and composite films prepared with fillers without surface modifications revealing that all composites with surface modified fillers exhibited some improvement in resistance to cavitation.

abstract = "Composite films having the UV cured Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate)/TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and the ferrous oxide doped alumina (Al2O3 Fe) based particles were prepared and subjected to cavitation. Results were compared to the same polymer matrix film and composite films prepared with fillers without surface modifications revealing that all composites with surface modified fillers exhibited some improvement in resistance to cavitation.",

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of cavitation erosion on the morphology of defects formed on the surfaces of alumina-based materials. The alumina-based samples were exposed to cavitation erosion for 42 min. The damages that occurred were monitored at predefined time intervals by measuring the mass loss and observing the sample surfaces. Digital images of surfaces were processed using an image analysis software package to define morphological characteristics of the damages occurred. The calculated morphological parameters were subjected to analysis by pattern recognition techniques to correlate the appearance of particular morphological characteristics with the behavior of the material during cavitation erosion. The newly established method in describing cavitation erosion which uses pattern recognition approach for treatments of morphological parameters calculated for damages by image analysis tools gave the results efficient for material characterization as the traditional one.

AB - In this study the resistance of cordierite and zircon to the cavitation erosion was investigated with the aim of possible spreading their application. Cavitation erosion test was applied using standard ultrasonic vibratory set up with stationary sample. Weight loss and image analysis measurements including morphological analysis of the formed pits were used for monitoring degradation during the cavitation erosion testing. The obtained results were discussed in order to compare and analyze degradation mechanism and the resistance of the investigated materials to cavitation erosion. Cordierite sample underwent less serious degradation, characterized by continual forming of new pits, while zircon degradation progressed by growth and merging of already formed pits.

AB - Quantitative assessment of the adhesion behavior between the composite film having UV cured Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate)/TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as matrix and the aluminum oxide based particles as a reinforcement on metallic surface was done using the microhardness testing method and compared to the contact angle. Composites are made with 1 wt %, 3 wt %, 5 wt % and 10 wt % of alumina based fillers. Films were subjected to the cavitation in order to evaluate the erosion resistance of the composite film on the metal. It is proved that the adhesion is improved with addition of the fillers while the cavitation resistance is improved up to 5 wt % of fillers.
