AB  - Cotton yarn was oxidized using the various concentrations and pH of potassium permanganate solutions, in order to investigate the influence of oxidation parameters on chemical, mechanical and sorption properties of cotton. The oxidation progress was monitored through weight loss, carbonyl and carboxyl group content, tensile strength, moisture sorption, crystallinity change, surface charge and morphology of modified samples. The carboxyl groups were introduced into the oxidized cotton up to 0.3 mmol center dot g(-1), while the weight loss was up to 5%. The oxidized samples, compared with untreated cotton, exhibited lower tensile strength, higher moisture sorption and surface roughness. Surface charge was evaluated through measurement of zeta potential at different pH of electrolyte, and the correlation was established between carboxyl group content and zeta values measured at neutral pH, which proved that zeta potential can be a valuable tool for characterizing changes in the structure of oxidized cellulose textile materials.

AB  - Hemp fibers with different amount of hemicelluloses and lignin were subjected to atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge under different conditions (40 W and 80 W power of discharge, const. time 120 s) in order to study influence of plasma treatment on their structure and sorption properties. Wettability of plasma treated samples, compared with precursors, increased due to the changes in hemp fiber surface chemistry confirmed by ATR FTIR spectroscopy and increased roughness as a consequence of intensive surface etching, observed by SEM. After plasma treatment, wettability was the highest for hemp fibers with lower content of hemicelluloses (increase up to 9 times), while wettability of raw hemp fibers and fibers with lower content of lignin increased about 5 and 2 times, respectively. This investigation shows that plasma can be successfully used for improvement of raw hemp fibers wettability, even to substitute the chemical treatment for some applications of hemp.

AB  - TEMPO oxidation of viscose fabric was used as a pretreatment 10 introduce carboxyl and aldehyde groups for irreversible binding of chilosan and to improve antibacterial activity and washing durability of viscose fabrics functionalized with chitosan nanoparticles withour (NCS) and with emt edded zine (NCS+ Zn). Carboxyl and aldehyde group content, electrokinetic properties, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and antibacterial testing were used to caluare the influence of TEMPO axidation on subseguent NCS and NCS+Zn binding and antibacterial properties of chitosan functionalized viscose fabrics. Anvibacterial activity of NCS and NC$+Zn functionalized viscose fabrics was preserved after multiple wasting.

AB  - Cilj istraživanja ove doktorske disertacije je dobijanje bioaktivnih nanostrukturnih materijala na baziregenerisane celuloze (RC), TEMPO oksidisanih celuloznih nanofibrila (TOCN) i hitozana (CS).Istraživanja sorpcionih svojstava ultra-tankih filmova na bazi RC i TOCN, primenom kvarc-kristalmikrovage sa praćenjem disipacije (QCM-D), omogućila su razumevanje njihovih interakcija savodom, CS i proteinima, kao i određivanje parametara procesa za dobijanje bioaktivnih nanostrukturnihmaterijala (filmova i tkanina) na bazi RC, TOCN i CS. Dobijeni nanostrukturni ultra-tanki filmovi, sobzirom na njihovu multifunkcionalnost (visok kapacitet sorpcije vode, protein-odbijajuća iantibakterijska svojstava), predstavljaju materijale koji mogu naći primenu kao obloge u terapiji rana.Tekstilni materijali sa antibakterijskim i antioksidativnim svojstvima dobijeni su funkcionalizacijomviskozne tkanine CS, nanočesticama hitozana (NCS) i nanočesticama hitozana sa inkorporiranimjonima cinka (NCS+Zn). U cilju poboljšanja antibakterijskih, antioksidativnih svojstava, kao i njihovepostojanosti na pranje, viskozne tkanine su pre funkcionalizacije pred-tretirane naslojavanjem saTOCN i TEMPO oksidacijom radi uvođenja karboksilnih i aldehidnih grupa pogodnih za ireverzibilnovezivanje CS, NCS i NCS+Zn. Uticaj pred-tretmana na vezivanje CS, NCS i NCS+Zn, hemijska,elektrokinetička, morfološka, sorpciona, mehanička i bioaktivna svojstva pred-tretiranih i hitozanomfunkcionalizovanih tkanina ispitan je primenom FTIR, ICP-OES, SEM i elementalne analize,merenjima zeta potencijala, kapilarnosti, sadržaja vlage, prekidne jačine, antibakterijskih iantioksidativnih svojstava. Postojanost na pranje viskoznih tkanina funkcionalizovanih hitozanompraćena je kroz promene u sadržaju hitozana i cinka, elektrokinetičkim, antibakterijskim iantioksidativnim svojstvima nakon višestrukih ciklusa pranja. Sa oba pred-tretmana postignuto jepoboljšanje adsorpcije CS, NCS i NCS+Zn, kao i antibakterijskih svojstva funkcionalizovanihmaterijala koja su postojana na pranje. Sve dobijene tkanine pokazale su dobra antioksidativnasvojstva, bez značajnog pogoršanja nakon višestrukih ciklusa pranja. S obzirom na postignutaantibakterijska i antioksidativna svojstva, viskozne tkanine funkcionalizovane CS, NCS i NCS+Znmogu naći primenu kao medicinski tekstilni materijali u prevenciji i terapiji rana.
AB  - The aim of this doctoral dissertation is obtaining of bioactive nanostructured materials based onregenerated cellulose (RC), TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) and chitosan (CS).The research on the sorption properties of ultra-thin films based on RC coated with TOCN, by using aquartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), helped us to understand their interactions withwater, CS, and proteins, and to determinate the parameters of the processes for obtaining of bioactivenanostructured materials (films and fabrics) based on RC, TOCN and CS. Obtained nanostructuredultra-thin films, thanks to their multifunctionality (high water absorbance capacity, protein-repellenceand antimicrobial properties), represent materials which could be applicable as dressings in woundtherapy.Textile materials with antibacterial and antioxidative properties were obtained by functionalization ofviscose fabrics with CS, chitosan nanoparticles (NCS) and chitosan nanoparticles with embedded zincions (NCS+Zn). To improve antibacterial, antioxidative properties, as well as their washing durability,viscose fabrics were pre-treated, before functionalization, by coating with TOCN and TEMPOoxidation in order to introduce carboxyl and aldehyde groups suitable for irreversible attachment of CS,NCS and NCS+Zn. The influence of pre-treatments on CS, NCS and NCS+Zn binding, chemical,electrokinetic, morphological, sorption, mechanical, and bioactive properties of pre-treated andchitosan functionalized viscose fabrics were evaluated by FTIR, ICP-OES, SEM and elementalanalysis, measurements of zeta potential, capillarity, moisture sorption, breaking strength, antibacterialand antioxidative properties. The washing durability of chitosan functionalized viscose fabrics wasmonitored through changes in the chitosan and zinc content, electrokinetic, antibacterial andantioxidative properties after multiple washing. With both pre-treatments improved CS, NCS andNCS+Zn adsorption, as well as washing durable antibacterial properties of functionalized materials,were achieved. All obtained fabrics have shown good antioxidative properties, without significantdeterioration after multiple washing. Based on achieved antibacterial and antioxidative properties,viscose fabrics functionalized with CS, NCS and NCS+Zn may find application as medical textilematerials in wound prevention and therapy.

AB  - The influence of the chemical composition on the biosorption potential of waste jute fabric for Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn(2+)was investigated. The raw jute fabric was treated with sodium hydroxide or sodium chlorite to selectively remove hemicelluloses and lignin, respectively. All jute fabrics were characterized by determination of their chemical composition as well as functional group content. The effects of solution pH, contact time, and initial metal ion concentration on the biosorption from monometallic and polymetallic solution by jute fabrics were investigated. The maximum biosorption capacity for all heavy metal ions was observed at pH 5.5. Concerning the contact time, the raw jute fabric shows more than 72 % of the total uptake capacity of Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn(2+)within 1 h, while the jute fabrics with lower hemicelluloses and lignin content show between 72-85 % of the total uptake capacity within 3 h. Increased initial metal ion concentration from 10 to 20 mg/lin monometallic solution caused an increase in the total uptake capacity of jute fabrics with lower hemicelluloses and lignin content for 47-69 % (Ni2+), 42-63 % (Cu2+), and 22-37 % (Zn2+). The biosorption capacity of alkali treated jute fabrics was affected by the changes in the total amount of carboxyl and aldehyde groups that accompany the hemicelluloses removal. In the case of the oxidative treatment, the biosorption capacity was affected by the lignin content as well as the amount of introduced carboxyl groups. The best biosorption performance possesses jute fabric with 63.2 % lower lignin content as well as 81.1 % higher amount of carboxyl groups; biosorption capacity toward Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn(2+)in monometallic solution is about 2.4; 2.2 and 3.5 times higher compared to the raw jute fabric, respectively. All jute fabrics exhibited the same affinity order (which is independent on the initial metal ion concentrations) toward heavy metal ions: Ni2+ gt  Cu2+ gt  Zn(2+)in the case of competitive biosorption. An increase in the initial metal ion concentration for two times in the polymetallic solution caused about a 35-59 % increase in the total uptake capacity of Ni2+, while the total uptake capacities of Cu(2+)and Zn(2+)increased for 19-38 % and 18-65 %, respectively.

Stability of TEMPO-oxidized cotton fibers during natural aging

AB  - Stability of cotton fibers oxidized by the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO)-mediated system during natural aging was monitored; the oxidized and five-year-aged fibers were characterized in terms of molecular weight distribution, quantity and distribution of functionalities, tensile strength, color difference, and yellowness index. The distribution of functionalities introduced in cotton fibers by TEMPO-mediated oxidation and subsequent aging was investigated by means of gel permeation chromatography using multiple detection and group-selective labeling. The mild TEMPO-mediated oxidation retains the molar mass of oxidized cotton, but this status is not stable during natural aging. For highly oxidized cotton, the molar mass of aged fibers is low but stable. Aged TEMPO-oxidized cotton shows a prominent discoloration and an increased yellowness index. For tensile strength, the limiting value was obtained for aged TEMPO-oxidized cotton, regardless of whether the samples had initially been oxidized with a low or high degree of oxidation.

Development of the automated software and device for determination of wicking in textiles using open-source tools

AB  - The development of automated software and the device for determination of wicking of textile materials, using open-source ImageJ libraries for image processing, and newly designed additional algorithm for the determination of threshold, is presented in this paper. The description of the device, design of the open-source software "Kapilarko", as well as an explanation of the steps: image processing, threshold determination and reading of wicking height, are provided. We have also investigated the possibility of using the artificial neural networks for automatic recognition of the wicking height. The results showed that the recognition of the wet area of the sample, based on the application of artificial neural networks was in a very good agreement with the experimental data. The device's utility for the measurement of wicking ability of textile materials was proved by testing various knitted fabrics. The constructed device has the advantages of providing automated measurement and minimization of the subjective errors of the operators; extremely fast or long-term measurements; digital recording of results; consistency of experimental conditions; possibility of using water instead of colors and, last but not least, low cost of the device. Considering the importance and frequent measurements of wicking ability of textile materials, the advantages of the presented device, as well as the fact that commercial software without publishing the source-code, are used for most of the available devices, we believe that our idea to design the automated software and device by applying the "open-source" approach, will be of benefit to scientists and engineers in using or improving wicking experiments.

AB  - The main objective of this study was to obtain viscose fabric
functionalized by chitosan with improved antibacterial properties. In
order to improve interactions between viscose fabric and chitosan, viscose
fabric was coated with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) before
functionalization by chitosan. Fabrics were characterized using elemental
analysis and zeta potential measurements. Carboxyl and aldexyde group
content, breaking strength and antibacterial activity were also evaluated.
Results show that coating with TOCN improved simultaneously mechanical and
antibacterial properties of functionalized viscose fabric against S.aureus making it more washing durable.

Dielectric loss factor of jute woven fabrics: effect of alkali treatment conditions

AB  - In this investigation, the influence of alkali treatment conditions on the dielectric loss factor of jute
woven fabric was studied. In that purpose, jute fabric has been alkali treated with NaOH solution
(1%, 5% and 17.5% ) at room temperature for different periods of time (5 min and 30 min). The
jute woven fabric is a heterogeneous three-phase (“fiber-moisture-air”) system, which implies the
need for investigation of jute fabric chemical composition, moisture sorption, crystallinity index
and structural parameters. The obtained results showed that with increasing the alkali treatment
severity, the hemicelluloses content decreased for 14.4-43.3%. In addition, the alkali penetration
induced fiber swelling and disrupting of the crystalline regions which result in a decreased
crystallinity index. Hemicelluloses removal together with the decreased crystallinity index
contributed to the higher availability of cellulose hydroxyl groups which in turns increases the
moisture sorption values of alkali treated jute fabrics (for 7.2-21.0%) compared to the untreated
fabric. With increasing the alkali treatment severity, the fabric thickness and fabric weight
increased, while the fabric porosity decreased. All mentioned properties influence the dielectric loss
factor, which is an important fabric parameter related to the ability of the fabric to dissipate electric
energy or to convert the electric energy to heat. On such way, the obtained increase of the dielectric
loss factor after the alkali treatments (for 2.5-9.2 times) can be attributed to the changes in the fabric
structural characteristics and decrease in the content of hemicelluloses and crystallinity index, as
well as the increased ability for moisture sorption.

AB  - Waste jute fabrics (raw and alkali modified), acquired as waste from different industries
were used as an efficient biosorbent for removal of Cu
2+
ions from aqueous solution. All
woven jute fabrics (raw as well as alkali modified) were characterized by determination of
their chemical composition and amount of carboxyl groups. The effect of solution pH,
contact time and initial metal ion concentration on the biosorption were studied. The alkali
modifications lead to hemicelluloses removal and an increased amount of carboxyl groups.
The maximum biosorption capacity for Cu
2+ was observed at pH 5.5. Concerning the contact
time, more than 80% of total Cu
2+
uptake by the raw jute fabric was removed within 1 h. On
the other hand, in the case of alkali modified jute fabrics, between 70-75% of the total Cu
2+
uptake was removed within 3 h. Increased initial ion concentration from 10 to 20 mg/l
caused an increase in the total uptake capacity of alkali modified jute fabrics for 42-55%. It
was found that the biosorption properties of waste jute fabrics are predominantly influenced
by the amount of carboxyl groups, while fabric chemical composition (i.e. hemicelluloses
content) has a secondary role in the biosorption of Cu
2+
ions. The best biosorption
performance possesses alkali modified jute fabric with 58% higher amount of carboxyl
groups; its total uptake capacity towards Cu
2+
ions (at 20 mg/l) is about 2 times higher
compared to the raw jute fabric.

AB  - The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma
treatment during 30 and 60 seconds on the fibrous polymeric materials made of cotton, polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene by recording the frequency dependence of the dielectric loss tangent. Furthermore, the changes in the sample surface morphology were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By comparing the frequency dependence of the dielectric loss tangent, the same trend with increasing the frequency was noticed for both untreated and treated samples, after 0.5 h as well as 2 and 7 days after plasma treatment. The changes in the value of dielectric loss tangent are small, but it can be noticed that the plasma effect on the cotton sample was maintained after 7 days, which is less noticeable for the samples made of polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene. The SEM analysis of the cotton sample
showed micro cracks on its surface as a result of plasma etching, while the polyethylene terephthalate fibers appeared darker and rough after the plasma treatment. The changes were more obvious on the samples treated 60 seconds compared to samples treated 30 seconds. There are no significant changes in the polypropylene sample surface morphology.

AB  - The jute woven fabric was treated with sodium hydroxide at room
temperature for 5, 30 and 45 min in order to obtain jute fabric with different
hemicelluloses content and to study their influence on the dielectric loss tangent. After
the alkali treatments, as the result of the hemicelluloses removal, the moisture sorption
of the jute fabrics increased. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the jute fabrics
with lower hemicelluloses content have a lower crystallinity index, which slightly
increased after the intensive hemicelluloses removal. These results are in a good
agreement with the results obtained for dielectric loss tangent measured at 30% and
80% relative air humidity.
AB  - Tkanina od jute je tretirana sa natrijum-hidroksidom na sobnoj
temperaturi u toku 5, 30 i 45 min u cilju dobijanja tkanina od jute sa različitim
sadržajem hemiceluloza i proučavanja njihovog uticaja na tangens dielektričnih
gubitaka. Nakon alkalnih tretmana, kao rezultat uklanjanja hemiceluloza, sorpcija vlage
se povećava. Analiza rezultata dobijena rendgenskom difrakcijom pokazuje da tkanine
sa manjim sadržajem hemiceluloza imaju manji indeks kristalnosti, koji se malo
povećava nakon intenzivnog uklanjanja hemiceluloza. Dobijeni rezultati su u saglasnosti
sa rezultatima dobijenim za tangens dielektričnih gubitaka merenim pri 30% i 80%
relativne vlažnosti.

AB  - Woven jute fabric was treated with NaOH solution of different concentrations for 5 min to
obtain jute fabrics with gradually decreased content of hemicelluloses and increased
moisture sorption. With increasing the concentration of NaOH the crystallinity index
decreased; in the case of NaOH concentration ≥ 10 % the conversion from cellulose Iβ to
cellulose II occurred. The obtained decrease of the volume electrical resistivity after the
alkali treatments can be attributed to the changes in hemicelluloses content, crystallinity
index and moisture sorption. Increased conversion from cellulose Iβ to cellulose II leads to
an increase in the volume electrical resistivity of the mercerized jute fabrics.

dovelo do smanjenja sadržaja hemiceluloza i povećanje sorpcije vlage. Analiza rezultata

AB  - U radu su ispitivani parametri komfora odevnih tkanina pre i posle termičkog fiksiranja međupostave. Kao eksperimentalni materijal korišćene su dve tkanine dobijene od mešavine pamučnih i poliestarskih vlakana izrađene u keper 3/1S prepletaju, kao i pamučna tkana međupostava sa tačkasto nanetim termoplastičnim vezivnim sredstvom. Od parametara komfora određivani su propustljivost vazduha i specifična zapreminska električna otpornost. Dobijeni rezultati su pokazali da je propustljivost vazduha u funkciji poroznosti ispitivanih uzoraka, njihove debljine i termičkog fiksiranja međupostave, dok je specifična zapreminska električna otpornost u funkciji strukturnih karakteristika tkanina, termičkog fiksiranja međupostave i relativne vlažnosti vazduha. Registrovano je da termičko fiksiranje međupostave dovodi do smanjenja propustljivosti vazduha i porasta vrednosti specifične zapreminske električne otpornosti ispitivanih tkanina.
AB  - In this paper, comfort parameters of clothing woven fabrics, before and after thermal fixation of interlining, were investigated. Two woven fabrics obtained from cotton and polyester fiber blends made in twill 3/1S weave, as well as cotton fusible woven dot fuse coat interlining, were used as experimental material. Air permeability and dc volume electrical resistivity were investigated as comfort parameters. The obtained results showed that the air permeability is in a function of porosity of the tested samples, their thickness and thermal fixation of interlining, while the dc volume electrical resistivity is in a function of the structural characteristics of woven fabrics, thermal fixation of interlining as well as relative air humidity. It is observed that the thermal fixation of interlining leads to a reduction in air permeability and an increase in the value of dc volume electrical resistivity of the tested woven fabrics.

Kvalitet sunđerastih krpa ocenjen na osnovu prekidnih svojstava

AB  - U radu su ispitivana prekidna svojstva dve grupe sunđerastih krpa dostupnih na tržištu Republike Srbije. Jednu grupu su činile sunđeraste krpe dobijene od mešavine viskoze i pamuka (uzorci 1-3), dok je druga grupa obuhvatala krpe ojačane poliestarskom mrežom (uzorci 4 i 5). Od prekidnih svojstava su određivani prekidna sila, prekidno izduženje, sila probijanja i hod kugle pri probijanju. Ispitivanja su realizovana na uzorcima neposredno nakon njihovog vađenja iz komercijalnog pakovanja (mokri uzorci), i sušenja na vazduhu (T=30 °C, φ=40%) u trajanju od dva dana (suvi uzorci). Dobijeni rezultati su pokazali da su ispitivana prekidna svojstva u funkciji sirovinskog sastava krpa i vlažnosti ispitivanih uzoraka, dok su prekidna sila i prekidno izduženje takođe i u funkciji pravca ispitivanja (uzdužni ili poprečni). Rezultati ocene kvaliteta ispitivanih krpa, dobijeni na osnovu kompleksnog koefi cijenta kvaliteta, pokazali su da samo uzorak 3 poseduje dobar kvalitet, dok ostala četiri uzorka imaju odličan kvalitet kako u mokrom, tako i u suvom stanju.
AB  - In this paper, the strength properties of the two groups of sponge cloths available on the market of the Republic of Serbia were investigated. One group of sponge cloths was made of viscose - cotton fiber blend (Samples 1 to 3), while the other group was reinforced with a polyester net (Samples 4 and 5). Strength properties of investigated cloths were determined based on tensile strength, tensile elongation, bursting strength and ball traverse elongation. Investigations were carried out on samples immediately after their removal from commercial packaging (wet samples) and drying on the air (T=30 °C, φ=40%) in the duration of two days (dry samples). The obtained results showed that examined strength properties are in a function of the raw material composition of the sponge cloth and moisture content in the investigated samples, while the tensile strength and tensile elongation are also in a function of the direction of the investigation (machine direction or cross direction). The results of the quality assessment of the investigated sponge cloths, obtained based on the complex criterion of quality, showed that only the sample 3 has good quality, while the other four samples have excellent quality, both in wet and dry condition.

Sorption and dielectric properties of jute woven fabrics: Effect of chemical composition

AB  - The jute woven fabric was treated with sodium hydroxide and sodium chlorite under different conditions in order to study the influence of the chemical composition on their sorption and dielectric properties. After the alkali treatments, the hemicelluloses content decreased in the range of 14.4-46.7%, which leads to elementary fiber liberalization and increased moisture sorption of the jute fabrics up to 15.5% and 11.9% at 30% and 80% relative humidity, respectively. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the removal of hemicelluloses for 14.4% and 36.6% was followed by a decrease in the crystallinity index for 3.0% and 18.8%, respectively. The additional decrease in hemicelluloses content of 46.7% was accompanied by a slight increase in the crystallinity index for about 14%. These results are in a good agreement with the results obtained for the AC specific electrical conductivity (at 30% and 80% relative humidity). After the oxidative treatments, the lignin content decreased in the range of 37.8%-79.0%, which causes two parallel effects: a slightly increased moisture sorption (up to 7.4% and 4.6% at 30% and 80% relative humidity, respectively) and crystallinity index (from 4.8%-16.6%). The jute fabrics with 37.8% and 63.2% lower lignin content and similar moisture sorption values have the same AC specific electrical conductivities at both relative humidities (30% and 80%) revealing a dominant effect of moisture sorption. The AC specific electrical conductivity of the investigated jute fabrics increases with increasing the frequency as well as relative air humidity, where the highest difference between the values of AC specific electrical conductivity is obtained at the highest frequency (140 kHz).

AB  - Compression and strength properties of viscose/polypropylene nonwoven fabrics has been studied. Compression behavior of the nonwoven samples (sample compressibility, sample thickness loss & sample compressive resilience) have been analyzed considering the magnitude of applied pressure, fabric weight, fabric thickness, and the porosity of the samples. Based on the calculated porosity of the samples, pore compression behavior (pore compressibility, porosity loss & pore compressive resilience) are determined. Equations for the determination of pore compressibility, porosity loss, and pore compressive resilience, are established. Tensile strength and elongation as well as bursting strength and ball traverse elongation are also determined. The results show that the sample compression behavior as well as pore compression behavior depend on the magnitude of applied pressure. At the high level of applied pressure, a sample with higher compressibility has the lower sample compressive resilience. Differences in pore compressibility and porosity loss between investigated samples have also been registered, except in pore compressive resilience. Sample with the higher fabric weight, higher thickness, and lower porosity shows the lower sample compressibility, pore compressibility, sample thickness loss, porosity loss, and tensile elongation, but the higher tensile strength, bursting strength, and ball traverse elongation.

AB  - Woven jute fabric was treated with sodium hydroxide solution of different concentrations at room temperature, for different periods of time. After that, jute fabrics with gradually decreased content of hemicelluloses were obtained. The changes of the sorption properties (moisture sorption, water retention power and degree of fiber swelling) and dielectric properties (effective relative dielectric permeability, AC specific electrical conductivity and dielectric loss tangent) of alkali treated jute fabrics were investigated. After the alkali treatments, the degree of accessibility of the cell wall components to water vapor increased with increased severity of the alkali treatment. In parallel, the degree of fiber swelling and total water holding capacity of the fabrics were increased. The dielectric properties are very sensitive to fabric structural characteristics, chemical composition and its ability for moisture sorption. Thus, the obtained increase of the effective relative dielectric permeability after the alkali treatments can be attributed to the changes in the structural characteristics and decrease in the content of hemicelluloses, which further contributed to an increased ability for moisture sorption. After that, jute fabrics with gradually decreased content of hemicelluloses were obtained. The changes of the sorption properties (moisture sorption, water retention power and degree of fiber swelling) and dielectric properties (effective relative dielectric permeability, AC specific electrical conductivity and dielectric loss tangent) of alkali treated jute fabrics were investigated. After the alkali treatments, the degree of accessibility of the cell wall components to water vapor increased with increased severity of the alkali treatment. In parallel, the degree of fiber swelling and total water holding capacity of the fabrics were increased. The dielectric properties are very sensitive to fabric structural characteristics, chemical composition and its ability for moisture sorption. Thus, the obtained increase of the effective relative dielectric permeability after the alkali treatments can be attributed to the changes in the structural characteristics and decrease in the content of hemicelluloses, which further contributed to an increased ability for moisture sorption. AB  - The main objective of this study was to obtain chitosan functionalized viscose fabric with improved antibacterial properties and washing durability. In this regard carboxyl and aldehyde groups, as binding points for irreversible chitosan attachment into/onto viscose fabric, were introduced by two different pretreatments: 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO) oxidation and coating with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, breaking strength and antibacterial testing were used to evaluate the influence of these pretreatments on chitosan binding, but also on chemical, electrokinetic, morphological, mechanical and antibacterial properties of pretreated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabrics. Washing durability of chitosan functionalized viscose was monitored through changes in the chitosan content, electrokinetic and antibacterial properties after multiple washing. TOCN coating improves mechanical properties of fabric, while TEMPO oxidation deteriorates them. The results show that both pretreatments improve chitosan adsorption and thus antibacterial properties, which are highly durable to washing. After five washings, the chitosan functionalized pretreated viscose fabrics preserve their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, while antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was lost. TOCN coated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabric is a high value-added product with simultaneously improved antibacterial and mechanical properties, which may find application as medical textiles.

AB  - Nanostructured and bio-active polysaccharide-based thin films were manufactured by means of subsequent spin-coated deposition of a regenerated cellulose (RC) layer and a 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) oxidised cellulose nanofibril (TOCN) layer. The bio-activity of the bilayer was achieved by addition of chitosan (CS). The chitosan was either mixed with the TOCN (TOCN+CS) and deposited on the RC layer by spin-coating, or deposited on the RC and TOCN bilayer by pumping its aqueous solution with various pH over the surface of the bilayer. The water content of the thin films and the CS interactions with the bilayer during deposition were studied in situ by means of a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The pH dependent charging behaviour of the TOCN, TOCN+CS and CS dispersions was evaluated by pH-potentiometric titrations. The surface morphology of the thin films was characterised by atomic force microscopy (AFM). basis for the manufacture of textile products for medical use are the most commonly
biologically active fibers. Because in hospitals very often microorganisms create and
exacerbate problems by transmitting diseases and infections, adequate protection or treatment
of materials is required to prevent their reproduction. Biologically active fibers, in addition to
prophylaxis, are also used for therapeutic purposes" They are especially important in therapies
where it is necessary to maintain the drug level over a long period of time. It is safe to say that
these fibers and the materials made from them belong to modern medical materials.

AB  - In this work, an influence of oxidation with potassium
permanganate (KMnO4) of different  concentration, on the structure,
sorption properties and surface charge of cotton yarn was  investigated.
Cotton oxidation was performed at const pH for 1 hour. After the
oxidation,
samples were washed, dried and characterized from the aspect of change in
morphology,  sorption properties, COOH group content and surface charge.
The results have shown that  oxidation with the most concentrated solution
of KMnO4 led to significant increase of COOH group content in the sample
(around 6 times), which thus led to increment of moisture sorption as well
as reduction of zeta potential in basic range. These results confirmed
that KMnO4 could be successfully used for cotton oxidation with aim to
improve
sorption properties.

predstavljaju otpadne vode. Jedan od primera je proces bojenja u
tekstilnoj industriji (gde postoji problem uklanjanja ostataka boja kao
organskog zagađivača iz vode). Postoje različiti fizičko hemijski i
biološki postupci za prečišćavanje otpadnih voda. U tekstilnoj industriji
se, pored otpadnih voda, generišu još dve vrste otpada a to su gasovi i
čvrsti otpad. Najčešće korišćen postupak za prečišćavanje je adsorpcija.
AB  - The current topic in the world is ecology, that is, preventing
or at least reducing environmental pollution. The release of toxic
substances from various industrial plants into the immediate environment
causes pollution of water, air and soil. In plants where the production
process is carried out with wet treatment, wastewater is a major problem.
One example is the dyeing process in the textile industry (where there is
a problem of removing dye residues as an organic pollutant from water).
There are various physicochemical and biological processes for
wastewater treatment. In the textile industry, in addition to wastewater,
two more types of waste are generated, namely gases and solid waste. The
most commonly used treatment method is adsorption.

AB  - In this paper, the principles of the action of the selective (NaIO4 and
2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-TEMPO radical) and non-selective (H2O2 and
KMnO4) oxidation agents on cellulose are presented. Their importance in modifying the
existing properties or giving new properties to cellulosic materials, as well as examples of
their applications are also given. The oxidation product - oxycellulose presents the base for
obtaining a wide range of materials for special applications. Particularly, the influence of
TEMPO-mediated oxidation on natural and man-made cellulosic fibers is presented, with a
detailed overview on the type and quantity of introduced functional groups, changes in
structure, sorption and mechanical properties. Also, we described the use of TEMPOmediated oxidation for the production of cellulosic nano-materials in the form of
dispersions, particles and films, as well as the potential application of these nano-structural
materials.
AB  - U ovom radu predstavljeni su principi dejstva selektivnih (NaIO4
i 2,2,6,6-tetrametilpiperidin-1-oksil - TEMPO radikal) i neselektivnih (H2O2 i
KMnO4) oksidacionih sredstava na celulozu, njihov značaj u modifikovanju
postojećih ili davanju novih, specijalnih svojstava celuloznim materijalima, kao i
primeri njihove primene. Proizvod oksidacije ‒ oksiceluloza, predstavlja polaznu
osnovu za dobijanje širokog spektra materijala specijalne namene. Posebno je
predstavljen uticaj TEMPO-oksidacije na prirodna i hemijska celulozna vlakna, sa
detaljnim osvrtom na tip i količinu uvedenih funkcionalnih grupa, promenama u
strukturi, sorpcionim i mehaničkim svojstvima. Opisana je i primena TEMPO-oksidacije za dobijanje celuloznih nanomaterijala u obliku disperzija, čestica i
filmova, kao i potencijal primene ovih nanostrukturnih materijala.

AB  - The paper gives an overview of the current state in the field of natural and chemical cellulose fibers, as well as future prospects of these fibers. While there is a strong expansion of the synthetic fibers industry, world production and consumption of natural and chemical cellulosic fibers were stabilized at certain level with small oscillation in the last few years. Cotton production reaches average level at 25 mil.ton, flax production at 0.8 mil. ton, hemp production at 0.07 mil.ton and jute production at 3.3 mil.ton, while chemical cellulosic fiber production reaches average level at 6 mil.ton. It is expected that cellulose fibers only for clothing, will be in demand up to 40 mil.ton in the year 2050 due to growing market of hydrophylic fibers and tendency to develop production of natural, light, renewable and biodegradable fibers. In this regard, bast fibers, such as flax, hemp, jute, ramie, etc., isolated from plants that cause little or no detrimental effect on the ecosystem, acquire enormous significance. Their modification and conversion into novel value-added products have been discussed.
AB  - U radu je prikazano sadašnje stanje u oblasti prirodnih i hemijskih celuloznih vlakana, kao i očekivanja vezana za ova vlakna. U poređenju sa ekspanzivnim razvojem sintetizovanih vlakana, svetska proizvodnja i potrošnja prirodnih i hemijskih celuloznih vlakana se stabilizovala na određenom nivou: proizvodnja pamuka oko 25 mil.tona, lana 0,8 mil.tona, konoplje oko 0,07 mil.tona, jute oko 3,3 mil.tona, a hemijskih celuloznih vlakana na nivou od oko 6 mil.tona. Očekuje se da će do 2050.god, zahvaljujući rastućem tržištu hidrofilnih vlakana i tendenciji ka razvoju proizvodnje lakih, prirodnih, obnovljivih i biorazgradivih vlakana, potrebe za ovim vlaknima, samo u oblasti odevnog tekstila, dostići nivo od oko 40 mil.tona. Posebno je analiziran potencijal vlakna iz like (lan, konoplja, juta, ramija), njihovo modifikovanje i konverzija u nove proizvode visoke dodate vrednosti, s obzirom da biljke iz kojih se ova vlakna izoluju, kao i sam proces njihove prerade, nemaju negativni uticaj na ekosistem.
