AB - The ∼60 nm wide and ∼2 μm long TiO2 nanotubes were obtained by anodization of Ti films sputtered on F-doped tin oxide glass. For N-doping the samples were annealed in ammonia atmosphere. The effect of pre- and post-annealing in air on the nature and amount of incorporated N was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By measuring the absorption spectra of the obtained samples and interpreting the corresponding Tauc plots it was shown that the sample annealed just in ammonia showed the highest visible light absorption even after sputtering cleaning and a decrease of N amount from 3.8% to 1%. Pre and/or post annealing in air led to smaller amount of incorporated N, that caused less pronounced absorption enhancement and smaller band gap narrowing compared to the sample annealed only in ammonia. By fitting of N 1 s line, the contribution that was assigned to substitutional N was detected only in the samples that did not sustained post-annealing. The study showed that post-annealing in air might lead to partial conversion of N atoms in TiO2 to oxidized nitrogen species that are easily removed with sputtering. It is also possible that substitutional nitrogen was suppressed by oxygen from air to move to interstitial site. Weakly bonded NOx surface species, which are cleaned away by sputtering, can be removed by post-annealing in air. Those surface species could act as sensitizers and when their amounts are reduced, the core absorption properties, as a result of interstitial incorporation of N in TiO2 structure, were revealed. Much lower visible light sensitization was achieved in the case of pre-annealed sample in comparison to sample without pre-annealing, regardless the same quantity and type of incorporated nitrogen.

AB - Nanosphere lithography is an effective technique for high throughput fabrication of well-ordered patterns on large areas. This study reports on nanostructuring of silicon samples by means of Ag ions implantation through self-organized polystyrene (PS) masks. The PS nanospheres with a diameter of similar to 150 nm were self-assembled in a hexagonal array on top of Si(100) wafers, and then used as a mask for subsequent 60 keV silver ion implantation. Different fluences were applied up to 2 x 10(16) ions/cm(2) in order to create a distribution of different sizes and densities of buried metal nanoparticles. The surface morphology and the subsurface structures were studied by scanning electron microscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, as a function of the mask deformation upon irradiation and the implantation parameters itself. We demonstrate that Ag is implanted into Si only through the mask openings, thus forming a regular array of amorphized regions over the wide area of silicon substrate. These fragments are of similar dimensions of the spheres with widths of about 190 nm and distributed over 60 nm in depth due to the given ion range. At the subsurface region of the implanted fragments, the synthesis of small sized and optically active Ag nanoparticles is clearly observed. The samples show a strong absorption peak in the long-wavelength region from 689 to 745 nm characteristic for surface plasmon resonance excitations, which could be fitted well using the Maxwell-Garnett's theory.

AB - This paper describes the pyrolysis of Poplar fluff (from Populus alba) using on-line apparatus, and carbonization process at 850 degrees C using the fixed bed reactor. Characteristics of pyrolysis products were examined. Elemental and chemical analyses were shown that Poplar fluff has higher energy content characterized by increased content of fibrous structure (particularly cellulose). Independent parallel reactions model very well describes devolatilization process. It was found that increased amount of extractives can significantly affect on increased release of light gaseous products, but declining hydrocarbons, mostly the alkanes. Liquid product is mainly composed of phenolics, aldehydes, acids, esters and ketones. The carbonization process produces the great abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), where naphthalene is the most abundant. Mechanism for PAH's formation was suggested. This study represents the first step in a much wider and more comprehensive way in thermal conversion processes of this type of fuel.

AB - In this work we investigated the influence of different deposition angles on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel thin films obtained by Glancing Angle Deposition. The films were deposited onto glass substrates at the angles of 65° and 85°. The structure of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic properties were analyzed using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy (MOKE). It was found that the variation in the deposition angle has a great influence on the porosity, crystallinity and surface roughness of the Ni films. The obtained changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in the magnetic properties. MOKE measurements revealed that the thinner films, deposited at the angle of 85°, have a 2.5 times higher coercivity in comparison with the films deposited at the lower angle, which can be ascribed to their higher porosity. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The self-assembly methods, an inexpensive and high throughput technique capable of producing nanostructure arrays, relies on the formation on a monolayer of self-assembled nanospheres. This paper reports on the formation of large-areas monolayer polystyrene particles similar to 150 nm in diameter onto monocrystalline Si (100) substrates by using the spin-coating method. In this method, the quality of the deposited monolayer is determined by the balance between spinning and solvent evaporation, accounted by two different forces, the centrifugal force and viscous shearing force, and their interplay. The key process parameters which influence the deposition process and determine the properties of polystyrene monolayers such as the spinning rate, time and concentration of PS particles in the solution were studied. By varying the experimental conditions in different steps the films quality can be easily improved and the optimized experimental parameters were achieved. A homogenous and well-ordered PS monolayer with a high surface coverage of similar to 94 % was formed on a large-area substrate of 1 cm x1 cm at specific conditions of a 2000 rpm spinning rate, 2 wt. % polystyrene solution concentration and 210 s duration of the spinning process. We conclude that this method can be useful in a variety of applications since it offers a stable and controllable approach to the fabrication of monolayer polystyrene films on a large-scale.

We conclude that this method can be useful in a variety of applications since it offers a stable and controllable approach to the fabrication of monolayer polystyrene films on a large-scale.",

AB - We report on glycine-free and glycine-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of microsized superstructures composed of self-assembled hematite nanoparticles. An X-ray powder diffraction measurements of the samples confirm good crystallization of the hematite nanoparticles with hydrothermal reaction time-dependent crystallite sizes in a range from ∼15 nm (45 h) to ∼26 nm (90 h). The FTIR and Raman spectroscopy confirm hematite structure, whereas TEM measurements reveal nanoparticle sub-units (subparticles). The computational analyses of particle shape show that the addition of glycine surfactant in hydrothermal reaction leads to more spherical shape of hematite hierarchical structures and smaller sizes. We found strong coercivity increases (up to ∼3 times) in the samples synthesized in the presence of glycine. The coercivity values from HC = 1305 Oe (mushroom-like shape synthesized by glycine-free hydrothermal reaction) to HC = 3725 Oe (sphere-like shape synthesized by glycine-assisted hydrothermal reaction) were obtained at 300 K. These results and their comparison with other described in the literature (e.g. bulk, wires, urchin-like, rods, tubes, plates, star-like, dendrites, platelets, irregular, nanocolumns, spindles, disks hematites, etc.) reveal that the hematite superstructures possess good magnetic properties. We propose that the glycine, oriented subparticles, exchange and dipole-dipole interactions may play an important role in the development of magnetic properties.

AB - To produce well-defined metal clusters stabilized in protective matrix, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNi-PAAm) hydrogel with different initial concentration of polymer was used as nanoreactor. The in situ synthesis of well dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was performed by gamma irradiation. The obtained AgNPs are spherical in shape with the diameter less than 20 nm. Crystalline properties of nanoparticles such as size, texture coefficient, strain, stress, lattice parameter, d-spacing, and dislocation density have been calculated using XRD data. Results confirm that the changes of lattice parameter of crystalline AgNPs sensitively reflect their state of strain and stress depending on the formation conditions (i.e., on the concentration of PNiPAAm) and on the diameter of AgNPs. The negative lattice strain and compression stress were observed for the smaller AgNPs (lattice contraction), while for the larger AgNPs are positively strained and under tensile stress (lattice expansion). XPS spectra revealed the donor-acceptor type of interaction between carbonyl oxygen from PNiPAAm and AgNPs (positive shift of high BE component of O 1s and negative shift of Ag 3d BE). The greater dislocation density of smaller AgNPs incorporated in more concentrated PNiPAAm, resulted in more binding sites and stronger interaction with polymer.

AB - In this work, Glancing Angle Deposition technique was used for obtaining nanostructured nickel thin film with vertical posts on glass substrate which was positioned 75 degrees with respect to the substrate normal and rotated with a suitable constant speed. The obtained nickel thin film was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. It was found that the deposited thin film consists of 94.0 at.% of nickel. Magnetic properties of the deposited thin film were determined by Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Microscopy. According to the obtained coercivity values, it can be concluded that the nickel thin film shows uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

AB - A process of obtaining N-doped TiO2 nanotubes sensitized by CdS nanoparticles is presented, including detailed characterizations performed along the synthesis. Transparent TiO2 films consisting of nanotubes, 2.5 mu m long and of similar to 60 nm inner diameter, were obtained after anodization of a titanium film deposited onto FTO glass substrate. N-doping was achieved by annealing of TiO2 film in ammonia. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements showed that nitrogen was substitutionally incorporated in the TiO2 matrix, with the N:Ti concentration ratio of 1:100. The doping changed the optical properties of the material in such a way that the absorption edge was shifted from 380 nm to 507 nm, as observed from diffuse reflectance spectra. The influence of the microwave (MW) irradiation on the synthesized CdS quantum dots and their optical properties was investigated. It was shown that the diameter of CdS nanoparticles was increased due to releasing of S-2-ions from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a consequence of the MW treatment. The (N)TiO2 films were then used as substrates for matrix assisted pulsed laser deposition of the CdS quantum dots with DMSO as a matrix. The laser parameters for the deposition were optimized in order to preserve the nanotubular structure open, the latter being an important feature of this type of photoanode. The structure obtained under optimized conditions has an additional absorption edge shift, reaching 603 nm.

AB - Activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared using plane tree seed (PTS) as a cheap and renewable raw material. The plane tree seeds were firstly treated combining magnetic (MM) and ultrasonic mixing (USM) during 0.5, 1 and 3 h in 1 M, 3 M and 6 M of H3PO4 solutions, and then activated at 260 degrees C during 20 h (low temperature hydrothermal carbonization-low HTC) in above mentioned solutions of the same molarity. The influence of combined mixing and activation processes on physical, structural and morphological properties, and their optimization was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

AB - A novel cancer-targeting drug delivery system is constructed and characterized, based on folic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles with pore-loaded anticancer drug vinblastine and pore-blocking fullerenol molecules. The selective treatment efficacy based on targeting of cancer-verexpressed folate receptors is demonstrated by comparison of cell viability upon the treatment of healthy MRC-5, breast cancer MCF-7 and cervical cancer HeLa cells, which are known to differ in the amount of folate receptors on their surfaces.

AB - In this work, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation of Ni using Glancing Angle Deposition technique onto the glass substrate with the thickness varied from 25 nm to 150 nm. Characterization of obtained Ni films was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by Magneto-Optical Kerr effect measurements (MOKE). The effect of thickness on structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel films has been studied. Observed changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in magnetic parameters obtained by MOKE measurements. It was found that for thinner Ni films, the enhancement of coercivity is due to the surface roughness of Ni films, while for thicker films the observed asymmetry of coercivity is due to the mechanism of column size growth. AB - A range of industrial by-products are currently under the consideration as cost-effective alternatives to conventional sorbent materials for environmental clean-up and remediation applications. Bauxite residue (red mud) has demonstrated exceptionally high potential for the immobilization of cationic pollutants. Due to heterogeneity of such material, determination of the role of individual mineral phases in the overall sorption mechanism is a challenging task. To enlighten the mechanism of Co(II) sorption by mineral assemblage of the red mud, sequential extraction analysis of Co-loaded sample was combined with the microscopic and spectroscopic studies performed by Scanning Field Emission Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Sorbed Co(II) ions were found associated with operationally defined Fe,Mn-oxide and carbonate/acid soluble fractions. Binding of Co(II) by the red mud was achieved primarily by means of chemisorption/surface precipitation on Fe- and Ti-oxides. In coexistence with these highly selective surfaces, gibbsite and silica appeared to be low affinity sites for Co(II). Incongruent dissolution of sodalite phase was detected, indicating that its function was not to ensure sorption centers, but to increase the solution pH creating favorable environment for Co(II) binding by Fe- and Ti-oxides. The results demonstrate high stability of sorbed Co(II) and synergistic action of mineral constituents as essentially important property for red mud implementation as a purifying and remediation agent.

AB - Novel nanocomposite containing fullerenol nanoparticles (FNP) and porous silica nanoparticles (PSNs) was constructed and characterized. The capability of FNP to serve as a pore-capping agent and for entrapping 9-aminoacridine (9-AA) inside the pores of the PSN material was also demonstrated. Nitrogen sorption measurements evidence the successful capping of the silica pores while thermogravimetric analysis of FNP loaded PSN indicates the existence of pore-loaded fullerenol molecules. Higher amount of the drug release was noted by exposing the material to weakly acidic conditions in comparison to physiological pH, which may find application in targeted treatment of weakly acidic tumor tissues.

AB - Thermo- and pH-sensitive Ag-P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites were prepared by in situ reduction of Ag+ ions with gamma irradiation. P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymer hydrogel matrices have been previously synthesized by radiation induced copolymerization. The copolymer composition was determined by elemental analysis of the dried gels, and was found to be close to that of the feed. The dependence of swelling properties and phase transitions on the IA comonomer content, temperature, pH values and presence of AgNPs were investigated. The hydrogels showed both thermo- and pH responses. By introducing small amounts of IA, swelling capacity increase, and the volume phase transition temperature (VPIT) of P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymers is transferred to higher values. Presence of AgNPs causes decrease of equilibrium swelling degree and VPIT, and allows of fine-tuning of these properties. Both the average values of compressive elastic modulus and Young's modulus of elasticity were decreased by addition of IA as a consequence of looser structure of the network (increase in molar mass between two neighboring crosslinks and decrease in effective crosslinking density). The introduction of AgNPs promoted not only improvement of these mechanical parameters, but an improvement of stress at failure especially in the systems with the highest content of IA. In addition, Ag-P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites showed good antibacterial potentials.

AB - A carbon-rich solid product has been synthesized by hydrothermal treatment from fructose with HNO3 at temperature of 140°C. The concentration of the precursor was changed in order to investigate how its change influences formation of carbon microspheres. pH value for every sample was the same, i.e. 1. The formation of the carbon rich solid through the hydrothermal carbonization of fructose is the consequence of dehydration reactions. Obtained carbon material is made of spherical micrometer-sized particles with the diameter in the 1-6 µm range, which can be modulated by modifying the concentration of fructose in solution. The best results are obtained with smaller concentrations of fructose. Spherical particles have more regular shape and they are less agglomerated. The structure and surface chemical properties of obtained material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and elemental analysis.
Sferne čestice imaju više pravilan oblik i oni su manje aglomerisane. Strukture i površinske hemijske osobine dobijenog materijala su sagledavane skeniranjem elektronskim mikroskopom (SEM) , FTIR-om i spektralnim i elementarnim analizama.

AB - Silver nanoparticles were produced inside a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogel (PVP) by an innovative method based on the electrochemical reduction of Ag+ ions within the swollen PVP hydrogel. UV-visible spectroscopy showed the highest value of the absorbance intensity and the lowest values of the wavelength of the absorbance maximum and the full width at the half-maximum absorbance for the Ag/PVP nanocomposite obtained at 200 V during 4 min. Cyclic voltammetry results suggested an adequate entrapment of the silver nanoparticles. The mechanical properties under bioreactor conditions of the Ag/PVP nanocomposite suggested the possibility of wound dressing application. Silver release from Ag/PVP nanocomposites was confirmed under static conditions as well as by their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:217-226, 2014.

AB - A nanosilver (nano-Ag)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel device was synthesized with irradiation because it is a highly suitable tool for enhanced nano-Ag technologies and biocompatible controlled release formulations. The amount of the Ag+ ions released in vitro by the nano-Ag/PVA hydrogel device was in the antimicrobial parts per million concentration range. The modeling of the Ag+ ion release kinetics with the elements of the drug-delivery paradigm revealed the best fit solution (R-2 gt 0.99) for the Kopcha and Makoid-Banakar's pharmacokinetic dissolution models. The term A/B, derived from the Kopcha model, indicated that the nano-Ag/PVA hydrogel was mainly an Ag+-ion diffusion-controlled device. Makoid-Banakar's parameter and the short time approximated Ag+-ion diffusion constant reflected the importance of the size of the Ag nanoparticles. However, it appeared that the cell oxidation potential of the Ag nanoparticles depended on the diffusion characteristics of the fluid penetrating into the Ag/PVA nanosystem.

AB - Silver/poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Ag/PVP) nanocomposites containing Ag nanoparticles at different concentrations were synthesized using gamma-irradiation. Cytotoxicity of the obtained nanocomposites was determined by MU assay in monolayer cultures of normal human immunocompetent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) that were either non-stimulated or stimulated to proliferate by mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA), as well as in human cervix adenocarcinoma cell (HeLa) cultures. Silver release kinetics and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were investigated under bioreactor conditions in the simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C. The release of silver was monitored under static conditions, and in two types of bioreactors: perfusion bioreactors and a bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion simulating in vivo conditions in articular cartilage. Ag/PVP nanocomposites exhibited slight cytotoxic effects against PBMC at the estimated concentration of 0.4 mu mol dm(-3), with negligible variations observed amongst different cell cultures investigated. Studies of the silver release kinetics indicated internal diffusion as the rate limiting step, determined by statistically comparable results obtained at all investigated conditions. However, silver release rate was slightly higher in the bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion as compared to the other two systems indicating the influence of dynamic compression. Modelling of silver release kinetics revealed potentials for optimization of Ag/PVP nanocomposites for particular applications as wound dressings or soft tissue implants.

AB - The study of the electrochemical reduction on acetonitrile modified platinum electrode and determination of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in neutral solution by simple galvanostatic technique is presented here. The obtained potential-time responses on the applied constant cathodic current pulses showed two potential transitions before achieving the steady-states, referring to the multi-step reduction process of nitro groups in TNT molecule. The calibration curves of the dependence of the square root of the first transition time (tau(0.5)) on the TNT concentration were linear in the ranges 4.4 - 303.8 mu M and 0.09 - 4.40 mu M for applied constant current of 0.1 mA. The detection limit was 0.09 mu M. The method was tested in the river water. The results indicated the sensitivity of the galvanostatic method for TNT determination in the environmental samples. From the first transition on the E-t curves the characteristics important for the understanding the mechanism of the reduction process were obtained. It was found that four electrons are involved in the reduction process of the first nitro group, indicating that the reduction product in a neutral electrolyte is hydroxylamine.

AB - Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of ZrC-SiC composite powders in the presence of LiYO2 sintering additive was studied. The starting powders were obtained by a carbothermal reduction (CTR) of natural mineral zircon (ZrSiO4), which provided an intimate mixing of in-situ created ZrC and SiC powders. This composite powder and LiYO2 as additive were densified by spark plasma sintering. Microstructural features of the composite were investigated by XRD, SEM/EDS and AFM analysis. The sintered composite material possesses promising mechanical properties and excellent cavitation resistance which was observed with a cavitation erosion test. The values of Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness of the composite material are 20.7 GPa and 5.07 MPam(1/2), respectively.

AB - Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was studied on Pd/Au(1 1 1) bimetallic surfaces in alkaline solution. Au(1 1 1) was modified by palladium nanoislands spontaneously deposited using PdSO4 center dot 2H(2)O and PdCl2 salts. As revealed from both surface topography Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and phase AFM images, for the same deposition conditions, the obtained Pd/Au(1 1 1) nanostructures differ depending on the counter anion in the depositing palladium salt. These differences are reflected on their catalytic activity toward HER, which occurs between the potentials for pure consisting metals. HER proceeded with the same mechanism, but it is shifted to more positive potentials for Pd/Au(1 1 1) nanostructures obtained using PdCl2 salt with respect to ones obtained using PdSO4 salt. Better catalytic activity of Pd/Au(1 1 1) nanostructures obtained using PdCl2 salt can be explained by their surface structure consisting of smaller and thinner Pd nanoislands, preferentially deposited at steps, which provides more Pd and Pd/Au sites suitable for hydrogen evolution reaction.
