AB - Artificial sweeteners are receiving increasing attention as newly recognized emerging contaminants that mainly reach the aquatic environment through the discharge of municipal wastewater containing large amount of these compounds. In this study, the impact of raw untreated wastewater discharges on the levels and the water/sediment distribution of artificial sweeteners in the Danube River and its largest tributaries in Serbia was evaluated, and a comprehensive assessment of environmental risks for freshwater and benthic organisms was performed. Acesulfame and sucralose were detected in all river water samples (100%), while saccharin (59%) and cyclamate (12%) were less frequently found, indicating long-term continuous sewage-derived pollution. Aspartame (100%) and neotame (60%) were the only artificial sweeteners recorded in the sediment samples due to their preference to sorb to particulate matter in the water/sediment system. In terms of ecotoxicological risk, a low risk for aquatic organisms was determined at the detected levels of saccharin in river water, while a high to medium risk was found for benthic biota at the concentrations of neotame and aspartame detected in sediments. The largest contribution to the pollution of the Danube River Basin with artificial sweeteners, and consequently the highest environmental risk, was determined in the two largest cities, the capital Belgrade and Novi Sad, which raises the issue of transboundary pollution.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are high-priority emerging contaminants that are widespread in surface waters worldwide as a result of municipal wastewater discharges into the aquatic environment. Given that these substances can cause toxic effects on aquatic organisms, they represent a potential risk for the river ecosystem as a whole. Although sediments have not often been the subject of scientific research on pollution with artificial sweeteners, there is a possibility that these substances pose a risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. Aspartame and neotame are sweeteners that have a high sorption affinity for organic-rich particles and partition to sediment in the water-sediment system. In order to determine the possible risk for benthic biota, an ecological risk assessment of detected aspartame and neotame in sediments from five rivers in Serbia was performed. In addition to the risk assessment of individual sweeteners, “the cocktail effect” of their mixture was also estimated. Detected levels were compared with the lowest predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values for sediment organisms from the Norman Ecotoxicology Database, based on experimental ecotoxicity data and QSAR model predictions for aquatic organisms.

AB - Municipal wastewater in the Belgrade area is discharged into the Danube and the Sava
Rivers without any treatment. This affects the quality of river water since wastewater is one of the
most important sources of environmental pollutants, including pharmaceuticals. To assess the impact
of this effect, the presence of three commonly used antibiotics in wastewater and receiving river water
was determined. A previously developed liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method
for the analysis of antibiotics in natural water matrices was validated for wastewater and applied in
analysis of samples from the Belgrade area. All investigated antibiotics were detected in both
wastewater and river water samples. The highest concentration of antibiotics in wastewater was
found for sulfamethoxazole, while trimethoprim was detected at the highest level in surface water.
The most frequently detected antibiotic in surface water was azithromycin. The environmental risk
assessment was performed for surface water biota. Azithromycin was found to pose a high risk to
aquatic organisms, while the risk level of sulfamethoxazole was medium or low. In conclusion, the
obtained results show the detrimental impact of untreated wastewater discharge on the river water
quality in the Belgrade area, emphasizing the need for urban wastewater treatment.

AB - Biocomposite hydroxyapatite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/gentamicin coatings were fabricated on titanium by an electrophoretic deposition process (EPD) from an aqueous suspension using the constant voltage method. Characterization of the deposited coatings was performed by scanning electron micros-copy with field emission (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C. The concentration of the released gentamicin was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS). The release profile confirmed an initial “burst-release effect” with ~ 30 % of the gen-tamicin released in the first 48 h, which could be of assistance in the prevention of biofilm formation. An-tibacterial activity was proven by the agar diffusion method on Staphylococcus aureus TL and Escherich-ia coli ATCC 25922 bacterial strains. Cytotoxicity was tested by the dye exclusion test (DET) on MRC-5 and L929 fibroblast cell lines, with both coatings expressing nontoxicity. The results showed the high ap-plicability potential of a poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposite coating for medical purposes.

AB - This is the first study of a broad range of chemical classes of emerging contaminants conducted by analyzing influent and effluent samples from the wastewater treatment plant of the city Topola, in Serbia. The list of compounds is extensive and this paper provides a better understanding of the environmental burden from different classes of emerging contaminants. The samples were prepared using an optimized solid-phase extraction method and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Removal patterns of selected compounds are discussed based on their physico-chemical properties and detected concentrations. Significant removal efficiencies, exceeding 70%, were found for the majority of investigated pharmaceuticals, pesticides, steroids, and sweeteners. Ecotoxicological risk assessment was performed by using two complementary methods: (1) an individual substance approach, based on the calculation of risk quotients (RQs) for each substance as the ratio of Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) and Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC), and (2) mixture risk assessment (“the cocktail effect”) based on the summation of individual RQs. The classical approach (ERA method with individual substances) identified amlodipine as the riskiest substance in WWTP effluent. The mixture ERA approach revealed new risks, which were not recog-nized by the classical ERA method, indicating that individually “safe” emerging compounds can contribute to a significant risk of the whole effluents.

AB - In this work, the environmental distribution of steroid compounds and the level of sewage-derived contamination were assessed using sterol ratios in the confluence area of two major rivers in the Serbian capital, where raw sewage is discharged without any treatment. Special attention was paid to steroids partitioning between the dissolved and suspended phases of river and wastewater samples, since steroids tend to easily bind to particulate matter. The efficiency of sterol removal in two wastewater treatment plants in Serbia was also evaluated. Human/animal sterols coprostanol and cholesterol, and phytosterol β-sitosterol were the dominant compounds in all water samples. The sterol abundance pattern in river water was different from that in raw sewage, indicating a more pronounced biogenic input, as well as greater impact of wastewater discharges on the composition of the suspended phase. Severe contamination of the investigated area was determined, with the Danube being more contaminated than the Sava River due to different hydrodynamic conditions leading to significantly higher sterol levels in the suspended particulate matter. It was also shown that the greater part of human/animal sterols and phytosterols present in river water samples (83.0 ± 11.9 % and 87.1 ± 15.2 %) and wastewater samples (92.1 ± 6.8 % and 95.0 ± 5.7 %) was bound to suspended material compared to the dissolved phase, emphasizing the need to consider and analyze both water phases in the tracing of steroid-based environmental pollution in order to obtain a realistic picture of steroid contamination and their fate in the aquatic environment. A high removal rate (>98 %) of coprostanol and cholesterol during wastewater treatment was determined and only the coprostanol/(coprostanol + cholestanol) ratio was found to be sensitive enough to be affected by an improvement in the quality of treated wastewater.

AB - Glavni put dospevanja lekova u životnu sredinu su komunalne otpadne vode. U regionu

AB - Artificial sweeteners have been recognized as high-priority emerging contaminants that cause great concern due to unknown environmental behavior and long-term ecotoxicological impact on water resources. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove these pollutants and consequently they are continuously introduced into the aquatic environment. This paper describes investigation of four artificial sweeteners, highly abundant in urban wastewater, and their removal rate in wastewater treatment plants in Serbia, in order to assess the efficiency of the treatment to reduce their environmental inputs. For this purpose, influent and effluent wastewater samples from two treatment plants were extracted and analyzed using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry.

Since most of them are metabolically inert and are incompletely eliminated in wastewater treatment plants, municipal wastewater is the main source of these compounds in the environment. Due to the limited knowledge of their environmental fate and ecotoxicity, artificial sweeteeners are recognized as high-priority emerging contaminants. Some of them, such as acesulfame and sucralose, are very persistent in the aquatic environment, so they can be used as chemical markers of municipal wastewater pollution. In this paper, the presence of the most commonly used sweeteners in the Republic of Serbia (acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate, sucralose and aspartame) was investigated in groundwater from two Belgrade Ranney wells, as well as in the Sava River, in order to assess the impact of untreated municipal wastewater on water sources, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry.ers as additives in food, beverages, medicines and oral care products has led to the accumulation of these substances in aquatic ecosystems around the world. AB - This paper describes a promising electrophoretic deposition (EPD) approach for developing composite coatings based on chitosan with the additional components of hydroxyapatite, graphene, and gentamicin on titanium substrate. Bioactive properties were investigated in vitro by immersing the coatings in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C. The newly formed biomimetic layer on the top of the deposited chitosan-based coatings on Ti was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical measurements, while coatings' bioactivity was proved by alkaline phosphatase activity assay in MRC-5 and L929 tested cell lines. The biocompatibility towards MRC-5 and L929 cell lines was investigated by dye exclusion test (DET) implying the non-cytotoxic effect of coatings. Gentamicin release studies were monitored during 21-day by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, indicating rapid release of gentamicin (approximate to 40%) in the first 48 h and more than 60% after 14 days.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are synthetic substances that are used to achieve the sweet taste of
food products, and their application in the Republic of Serbia is regulated by the national
guidelines on food additives. After ingestion, the largest percentage of these compounds passes
unchanged through the human body and reaches the environment through municipal wastewater. In
the last decade, studies have shown the widespread use of artificial sweeteners in surface and
groundwater. Due to limited data on their toxicity to wildlife in the water, as well as on their
behaviour in aquatic ecosystems, they are classified as emerging contaminants.
This paper describes the analysis of widely used sweetener cyclamate by liquid chromatography
with tandem mass spectrometry in untreated urban wastewater of Belgrade to assess the presence
and input of this compound into the environment. The results obtained by analysing four
wastewater samples from different sewage channels in Belgrade show the presence of cyclamate in
the concentration range of 4.3 µg L
–1
–23.2 µg L–1
. Since Belgrade does not have a wastewater
treatment plant, high levels of cyclamate indicate the continuous contamination of aquatic
ecosystems in Serbia and the potential danger to wildlife in the water.

AB - In the city of Belgrade, raw sewage is discharged directly into the Sava and the Danube rivers affecting the quality of river water. To determine the level of this impact, eight frequently used and detected pharmaceuticals were selected for the study. A previously developed method for analysis of pharmaceuticals in different water matrices was used. Sample extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, using the electrospray ionization technique. The most commonly detected analytes in both municipal wastewater and surface water were carbamazepine, known for its high environmental stability, and diclofenac, known as having high acute ecotoxicity. The dilution effect, noted for most of the detected drugs, was not as pronounced with diclofenac, indicating a higher risk for aquatic organisms.

AB - The electrophoretic deposition process (EPD) was utilized to produce bioactive hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HAP/CS) and hydroxyapatite/chitosan/gentamicin (HAP/CS/Gent) coatings on titanium. The bioactivity of newly synthesized composite coatings was investigated in the simulated body fluid (SBF) and examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results revealed carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite after immersion in SBF, emphasizing the similarity of the biomimetically grown HAP with the naturally occurring apatite in the bone. The formation of biomimetic HAP was confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements, through the decrease in corrosion current density and coating capacitance values after 28-day immersion in SBF. The osseointegration ability was further validated by measuring the alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) indicating the favorable osseopromotive properties of deposited coatings (significant increase in ALP levels for both HAP/CS (3.206 U mL(-1)) and HAP/CS/Gent (4.039 U mL(-1)) coatings, compared to the control (0.900 U mL(-1))). Drug-release kinetics was investigated in deionized water at 37 degrees C by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Release profiles revealed the beneficial "burst-release effect" (similar to 21% of gentamicin released in the first 48 h) as a potentially promising solution against the biofilm formation in the initial period. When tested against human and mice fibroblast cells (MRC-5 and L929), both composite coatings showed a noncytotoxic effect (viability gt 85%), providing a promising basis for further medical application trials.

When tested against human and mice fibroblast cells (MRC-5 and L929), both composite coatings showed a noncytotoxic effect (viability gt 85%), providing a promising basis for further medical application trials.",

AB - The widespread use of artificial sweeteners in the food and pharmaceutical industry
started at the beginning of the 1980s. Most of these compounds are not metabolized in human body
and are excreted mostly unchanged. Communal wastewater is the main source of artificial
sweeteners in the environment. Due to limited data on their ecotoxicity and fate in the environment,
they are classified as emerging pollutants. Previous research has shown the wide distribution of
these compounds in surface and ground water. In this paper, the method of preparation of
wastewater samples was developed and optimized using the solid-phase extraction for the analysis
of artificial sweetener saccharin. The sorbent type, the pH and the volume of the water sample, as
well as the elution solvent were tested in the sample preparation optimization. The obtained
extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The developed
method was applied to wastewater samples collected from three sewage discharges in Belgrade and
the surroundings. The detected concentrations of saccharin were in the range from 2.9 μg L–1
 to
13.5 μg L–1

AB - Artificial sweeteners are known as emerging pollutants in the environment. For decades
they have been used as food and pharmaceutical additives, which is why they are
widespread in natural waters, due to incomplete wastewater treatment. However, some
sweeteners, such as neotame, possess a high sorption affinity and partition to sediment in
the water-sediment system. Therefore, in this paper, a method for the sediment sample
preparation using an ultrasonic extraction for determination of neotame traces was
developed and optimized. After pre-treatment, river sediments (2 g) were extracted using
dichloromethane (3  5 cm3
) in an ultrasonic bath for 3  5 min. The obtained extracts were
analyzed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The developed
method was applied to sediment samples from several rivers in Serbia – the Tisza, the
Morava, the Sava and the Danube. For the first time, data on the contamination level of
sediments in Serbia with artificial sweetener neotame (in the concentration range from 2
to 48 µg g
–1
) were obtained.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are used as sugar substitutes in food and beverages which are regulated by national guidelines on food additives (Regulation No. 53/2018)1. After decades of application, their widespread occurrence in environment has been confirmed2. Furthermore, artificial sweeteners are recognized as emerging pollutants due to their ecotoxicity and limited knowledge on environmental fate. In this paper, the presence of aspartame was investigated in sediments of four rivers in Serbia – the Tisza, the Morava, the Sava and the Danube. Analysis of sediment samples was performed by using an ultrasonic extraction as preparation method. The obtained extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Aspartame was found in all investigated river sediments in the concentration range from 117 to 568 ng g–1. Data on the contamination levels of sediments in Serbia indicate potentially harmful effects of aspartame on benthic organisms.

AB - The Iron Gate I Reservoir is the largest impoundment on the Danube River. It retains gt 50% of the incoming total suspended solids load and the associated organic contaminants. In the sediment core of the Iron Gate I Reservoir we report the presence and fate of four classes of emerging contaminants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, steroids and perfluorinated compounds), predominantly not covered by the EU monitoring programs, but considered as future candidates. Based on contaminant's partitioning behavior in the water/sediment system and the suspected ecotoxicological potential asserted from the literature data, the risk of recorded concentrations for sediment-dwelling organisms was discussed. The high anticipated risk was associated with antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin, and pesticides linuron and carbendazim (banned in the EU, but still approved for use in the investigated area) and malathion. This indicated the need for better control of release of these compounds into the river, and implied their inclusion in future regular monitoring. Higher concentrations of pharmaceuticals and most pesticides and sterols were recorded in the fragment of allochthonous coarser sediment, assumed to have entered the reservoir during a high discharge event. Only one perfluorinated compound was recorded in the upper part of the sediment core. The vertical concentration profiles of pesticides propazine and malathion indicated their uniform source, most likely atmospheric transport and deposition of particles deriving from agricultural land.

AB - In this paper, multivariate analysis of sterol concentrations detected in river sediment samples was performed. In order to remove co-dependence of values, concentrations of sterols were transformed using centered log-ratio (CLR) transformation. The main objective of the work was to point out the damaging effects of working in the wrong geometry on the principal component analysis (PCA) assessment of sterol pollution. In order to determine if the dimension lost have effect on the principal component analysis of sterols in sediments, we have performed the PCA using raw and log-ratio transformed sterol data. Additionally, two rounded zero replacement approaches, i.e. a simple-substitution method (DL/2, 0.55DL and DL/root 2) and multiplicative replacement strategy (0.65 DL), were compared in order to determine if the replacement values have an effect on PCA results and conclusions. Relevant differences were noted by comparing the results of the principal component analysis obtained with raw data and log-ratio transformed sterol data. Only the PC loadings obtained from the CLR PCA allowed the clear distinction between human-sourced pollution and biogenic sources of sterols, whereas in the case of PCA with raw data loadings were all grouped almost in a single quadrant. For the small proportion of rounded zeros (not more than 10%), two different replacement approaches did not have any effect on transformed PCA output. The results presented in this work have shown that the effect of "closure" in the sterol data can be easily observed from the PCA biplot, and that it obstructs the evaluation of human contribution to pollution of river sediments. Therefore, prior to the PCA, sterol concentrations must be CLR transformed in order to perform a reliable assessment of the sewage contamination.

AB - After decades of using artificial sweeteners in the food and pharmaceutical industry, their ubiquitous presence in the environment has been determined 1,2. These substances are recognized as emerging pollutants due to limited data on their occurrence, environmental fate and ecotoxicity. Prior to analysis of artificial sweeteners at trace levels in water samples, it is necessary to isolate and concentrate analytes and clean-up the obtained extracts. In this paper, the optimization of the preparation method for the determination of saccharin, sucralose and neotame in water by solid-phase extraction (SPE) was performed. The extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). In the SPE optimization, the following parameters were tested: the sorbent type, the pH value and the volume of water sample and the elution solvent. The suitability of anion-exchange, polymeric, C18 and carbon sorbents for the extraction of selected sweeteners was assessed. The results showed that the highest recoveries were obtained using polymeric Oasis HLB cartridges, with copolymer poly(divinylbenzene-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone). Furthermore, it was determined that the pH value of water sample was crucial for extraction efficiency. For all three artificial sweeteners, the optimal pH value of the sample was 3. Finally, the sample volume of 100 ml ensured a high preconcentration factor without the sorbent breakthrough, and methanol was selected as the elution solvent.
