AB - The polymer nanocomposite ZnS/Poly (methylmethacrylate) was prepared by the solution casting method and its structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The basic material, ZnS, has the cubic structure and its crystallite size was estimated to be 2.3 nm, which implies that a strong confinement regime is in effect. Analysis of Raman spectra was performed using the fitting procedure based on effective medium theory. As a result, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode was detected. It was found that the shape and position of the SOP mode depend on the type of the composite.

AB - The composite nanofibers were used as reinforcement in acrylic polymer for the overall enhancement of thermo-mechanical properties, adhesion between fibers and matrix, and fracture toughness of the final nanocomposite since acrylic materials lack of this feature. So, a good balance between hardness/toughness and transparency is obtained with the addition of poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB) and titania (TiO2) nanofibers simultaneously and controlling their contents. Specifically, when compared to that of pure acrylic polymer, the fracture toughness of the PMMA nanocomposite apparently increased 55% with the addition of 3 wt.% titania nanoparticles, while the produced nanocomposite maintained high transmittance above 75-80% in the visible domain. The transmission spectrum modelling of the reinforced fiber materials and hybrid acrylic composites using Mie scattering theory for different particle sizes and particle content is presented. The calculated transmission coefficients versus wavelength are compared with the experimental ones.

AB - Processing and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix with embedded core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD's) were presented in this work. The aim is to preserve the optical activity of QD's in nanocomposite processing with improved mechanical properties. The modification of QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA interface was achieved with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). Nanocomposites were processed by solution casting. The samples of pure PMMA, and composites with unmodified and silane modified QD's CdSe/ZnS were processed. FTIR analysis revealed modification of QD's with silane and characteristic bonding with PMMA matrix. Raman spectrum confirms a presence of alloyed layer at the core-shell interface. Time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements confirmed slight blue shift in QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA composite without interface modification, while there was a slight red shift with modified particles. Oxidation effects in quantum dots were removed with the use of PMMA as a host, and the core remained active, which was confirmed with FTIR analysis and time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements.

AB - In this article, we report characterization of the layered composite fabricated from Nd3+ doped calcium twigstate single crystal (CaWO4 :Nd3+) and poly(methyl methacrylate) - PMMA with various organic-inorganic interfaces: CaWO4:Nd3+/MPTMS, CaWO4:Nd3+/PMMA and CaWO4:Nd3+/MPTMS/PMMA, a novel approach to optical composite materials. A trivalent neodymium-doped CaWO4 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. Poly(methyl methacrylate) - PMMA, was used as a protective polymer coating and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxy silane (MPTMS), with aim to provide better adhesion between the crystal surface and the polymer in the composite. The optical properties of the crystal plates with various layers applied on surface were characterized using FTIR absorption, IR reflectivity, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Performed tests on the structural, optical and photo-luminescent properties of composites can facilitate the research of potential applications in micro- and optoelectronics. Hardness of CaWO4:Nd3+ before and after surface modification was determined by micro Vickers hardness test. The improved hardness of composite with the use of the MPTMS as an adhesion primer before PMMA was achieved. FTIR spectroscopy indicates the establishing of chemical bonding between single crystal layer, silane and polymer layer. Raman and PL spectroscopy confirm that optical properties of crystal with polymer layers were preserved.

AB - The aim of the current work was to assess obtain a single crystal of calcium tungstate doped with neodymium - (CaWO4:Nd3+), and after that, the crystal was characterized with various spectroscopic methods. The single crystal was grown from the melt using the Czochralski method in air. By optimizing growth conditions, lt 001 gt -oriented CaWO4:Nd3+ crystalc up to 10 mm in diameter were grown. Number of dislocations in obtained crystal was 10(2) per cm(2). Micro hardness was measured with the Vickers pyramid. Anisotropy in lt 001 gt direction was not observed. Selected CaWO4:Nd3+ single crystal was cut into several tiles with the diamond saw. The plates were polished with a diamond paste. The crystal structure is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The obtained crystal was studied by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Seven Raman and six IR optical active modes predicted by group theory are observed. FTIR confirmed the occurrence of all the functional groups and bonds in this material. From the FTIR spectrum, a strong peak of 862 cm(-1) has been obtained due to the stretching vibration of WO42- in scheelite structure, and a weak but sharp band at 433 cm(-1) has been noticed due to the metal-oxygen (Ca-O) band. Estimated luminescence lifetime of F-4(5/2) - the I-4(9/2) transition is about 120 mu s; estimated luminescence lifetime of F-4(3/2) - the I-4(9/2) transition is about 140 mu s. All performed investigations show that the obtained CaWO4:Nd3+ single crystal has good optical quality, which was the goal of this work.

AB - The aim of the study was to estimate if dust/fly ash emitted into the atmosphere from chimneys and the ash disposal sites of the thermal power plants Nikola Tesla A and B in Obrenovac could increase the concentration of PM10 in New Belgrade. TNTA and TNTB are close to Belgrade (population of 2.5 million) and it is important to estimate the amount of the pollution emitted into the atmosphere from these sources. The pollution from chimneys is estimated from yearly amounts of discharge, while the lifting of ash/coal dust was parameterized by the model. The used model is the straight-line Gaussian plume model written in the Fortran programming language. The first estimation was done using mathematical modeling for the idealized situation with prescribed winds and stability. The second estimation was done using the observed meteorological data for the whole year of 2009. With strong winds (over 40 km/h), dust will reach Belgrade in dozens of minutes, while during moderate winds (similar to 10-30 km/h), it would take about one hour to reach it. In these cases atmosphere is close to the neutral stability class. In case of weaker winds and stable atmosphere, the increase of air dust concentration in Belgrade would start after a few hours (6-10). Regarding the other two sources of pollution, coal handling piles and ash deposit sites, during strong winds ( GT 40 km/h) and neutral stability, fly ash would reach Belgrade in several dozen of minutes. AB - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too.

AB - The objective of this study was characterization of anodic film obtained when Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy was treated electrochemically in 3.5% wt. NaCI under potentiostatic conditions. At the potential of +0.25 V a complex multilayer film is formed. XRD shows that it consists of CuCI and zinc hydroxichlorides with a small amount of Cu2O, probably formed in the film pores. The anodic film is a mixture of Cu2O, CuCI, Zn-5(OH)(8)center dot H2O and beta-Zn(OH)Cl. Phases of the alloy, Ag and Cu rich, show different anodic behavior. It was assumed that all phonon lines in the obtained Raman spectra were of the Lorentzian type, which is one of the common type of lines for this kind of analysis. Phases of Ag, CuCI, fl-Zn(OH)CI, Cu2O and Zn-5(OH)(8)(Cl)(2)center dot H2O were all registered by XRD.

AB - In this paper, the use of intrinsic intensity fiber-optic sensors for structural health monitoring was investigated. Polyethylene-based composite samples with glass mat reinforcement and embedded telecommunication fibers were subjected to impact using high-speed puncture impact tester as a calibration device. Transfer function of the sensor was generated by linking the light intensity modulation depth with the impact force and the impact point to fiber distance. Conditions for transfer function validity were presented. To detect any possible dangerous impact, a net of crossed fibers was proposed and the net spacing for the given material was calculated. Appropriate non-damaging calibration procedure was proposed, as well as the algorithm for locating the impact point. The method for calculating the impact force, the projectile momentum change, and the place of impact was verified by consecutive strikes on the previously calibrated sample. The sensor can also provide information on the time of the impact and an alarm signal if the force exceeds the damaging threshold force.

AB - It must be noted that the main objective of this study was to obtain single crystals of calcium fluoride - CaF2, and after that the crystals were characterized with various spectroscopic methods. The crystals were grown using the Bridgman technique. By optimizing growth conditions, lt 111 gt oriented CaF2 crystals up to 20 mm in diameter were grown. Number of dislocations in CaF2 crystals was 5x10(4) - 2x10(5) per cm(2). Selected CaF2 single crystal is cut into several tiles with the diamond saw. The plates were polished, first with the silicon carbide, then the paraffin oil, and finally with a diamond paste. The obtained crystal w.s studied by Raman and infrared - IR spectroscopy. The crystal structure is confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). One Raman and two IR optical modes predicted by group theory are observed. A low photoluminescence testifies that the concentration of oxygen defects within the host CaF2 is small. All performed investigations show that the obtained CaF2 single crystal has good optical quality, which was the goal of this work.

AB - The aim of the present work is characterization of electrochemically treated Ag43-Cu37-Zn20 alloy in near neutral chloride solutions by the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. At potential of +0.25 V, a complex multilayer film is formed. XRD shows that it consists of CuCl and zinc hydroxichlorides with small amount of Cu2O, probably formed in the film pores. It can be concluded that the Raman spectroscopy is observed almost all the modes that are registered with the XRD analysis.

AB - Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) and yttrium aluminum garnet doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG) single crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique. The critical diameter and the critical rate of rotation were calculated. Suitable polishing and etching solutions were determined. As a result of our experiments, the transparent YAG and pale pink Nd:YAG single crystals were produced. The obtained crystals were studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy. The crystal structure was confirmed by XRD. The 15 Raman and 17 IR modes were observed. The Raman and IR spectroscopy results are in accordance with X-ray diffraction analysis. The obtained YAG and Nd:YAG single crystals were without core and of good optical quality. The absence of a core was confirmed by viewing polished crystal slices. Also, it is important to emphasize that the obtained Nd:YAG single crystal has a concentration of 0.8 wt.% Nd3(+) that is characteristic for laser materials.

AB - In this paper, we used the Czochralski method to obtain good quality yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) and yttrium aluminium garnet doped with neodymium (Nd: YAG) crystals. The investigations were based on the growth mechanisms and the shape of the liquid/solid interface crystallization front on the crystal properties and incorporation of Nd3+ ions. The obtained single YAG and Nd: YAG crystals were studied by use of x-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy. There are strong metal oxygen vibrations in the region of 650-800 cm(-1) which are characteristics of Al-O bond: peaks at 784/854, 719/763 and 691/707 cm(-1) correspond to asymmetric stretching vibrations in tetrahedral arrangement. Peaks at 566/582, 510/547 and 477/505 cm(-1) are asymmetric stretching vibrations and 453/483 cm(-1) is the symmetric vibration of the Al-O bond in octahedral arrangements of the garnet structure. Lower energy peaks correspond to translation and vibration of cations in different coordinations-tetrahedral, octahedral and dodecahedral in the case of the lowest modes.

AB - Based on the approximate solution of Poisson's equation in the case of a p-doped silicon body, an improved current-voltage characteristic model of long-channel cylindrical surrounding-gate Si nanowire MOSFET is proposed. The improvement itself considers a realistic description of the carriers' mobility degradation owing to the radial electric field and a more detailed and accurate analytical solution to the 1D Poisson's equation than the solutions available in the literature. The model is valid in the wide range of the doping concentration and shows a satisfactory level of agreement with the two-dimensional simulation results and the former models. It can also be applied to different operation regimes such as subthreshold, linear and saturation regimes.

AB - In this paper, field effect transistor with active area made of carbon nano tubes (CNT FET), is investigated. At the beginning, CNT characteristics, structure and possibilities of their implementation as a FET channel, are presented. The new model of CNT FET current-voltage characteristics is developed and presented. In the model, capacitances of all interfaces are included. Special segment of this model is carrier's mobility model. Modeling of carrier's mobility is exposed. Two different carriers' mobility models are presented: analytical model that is developed and proposed and empirical model that is introduced. All models are modular and relatively simple. The results obtained by using proposed models are in very good agreement with already known ones.

4H-SiC vertical double implanted metal-oxide-semiconductor drift region-energy aspects of its formation and analysis

AB - A conventional vertical double implanted metal-oxide-semiconductor structure contains two n+ regions beneath two symmetrically posed source biases. These n+ regions are surrounded by a p-doped layer, which itself has an abrupt transition to the vertical drift region. Owing to the existence of these p-layers, the 'drift' region has varying cross sections: it is reduced going upward from the bottom (drain bias) to the top. Such a drift region is usually described either by a three piecewise model, which begins with constant cross section that at some point starts narrowing until at some other point it becomes reduced to the region between two p-regions, or by a two piecewise model, whose narrowing region starts right above the drain bias and finishes in the manner described before. The crucial geometrical parameters of the flow profile in the drift region, such as the slope of the cross-section reducing region and the length of the narrowest (accumulation) region are widely used but never determined, or even estimated, in the available literature. In this paper, the least-action principle has been utilized successfully in order to determine the exact values of these parameters and so make the existing models closed. The proof has also been provided, which shows that the three piecewise model described the flow profile better than a two piecewise model more adequately as long as it was permitted by the length of the entire drift region (the energy necessary to restore the specific value of drain current is smaller than for the three piecewise model). The two piecewise model can be accepted in practical calculations only for higher values of drain current far from a triode regime.

AB - In this work, single crystals of bismuth silicon oxide (BSO; Bi12SiO20) have been grown by the Czochralski method. The growth conditions were studied. The critical diameter and the critical rate of rotation were calculated. Suitable polishing and etching solutions were determined. The structure of the Bi12SiO20 has been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results obtained are discussed and compared with the published data. The pale yellow Bi12SiO20 single crystals prepared were without cores. Using spectroscopic measurements 19 Raman and 5 IR modes were observed.

abstract = "In this work, single crystals of bismuth silicon oxide (BSO; Bi12SiO20) have been grown by the Czochralski method. Using spectroscopic measurements 19 Raman and 5 IR modes were observed.",

AB - Silicon carbide (H-4-SiC as well as H-6-SiC) is known to be an anisotropic material. Among others, the transport parameters in the c-direction such as low field mobility and saturation velocity, are moderately different from those in the a- and b-directions in the case of H-4-SiC, while this difference becomes remarkable in the case of H-6-SiC. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of this anisotropy on an analytical model for "drift region voltage drop" in a H-4-SiC vertical double implanted metal oxide semiconductor (VDIMOS) structure.

AB - 4H-SiC VDMOS is a peculiar semiconductor structure with two considerably different recognized regions. One of them is a vertical drift region, whereas the other one appears as a horizontal channel with its left and right sections corresponding to source bias. In each of these regions current-voltage characterisic can become saturated regardless of the status of the other region, thus making possible several operation modes of the considered devices. The investigation of the onset of these saturations in their order of appearance is the goal of this paper.

AB - This paper presents new results obtained by investigations of silicon carbide (SiC) based vertical Double Implanted Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (DIMOSFET). The results are described and presented by the analytical model of drift region voltage and its impact on SiC DIMOSFET current-voltage characteristics. The drift region is devided into sections. For each of them, voltage analytical model across the corresponding section is developed. Mobility dependence model on temperature and electric field is introduced. Finally, current-voltage characteristics are obtained, by using drain to surce voltage model which incorporate the mentioned partial voltages. Proposed model is based on the physics of the SiC DIMOSFET. Significant effects are taken into account, thus the model is accurate. At the same time exposed model is relatively simple. By using developed model simulations were performed. The obtained results are in very good agreement with already known and published ones..
