AB - Vaccinium myrtillus L. leaves contain bioactive components, such as polyphenols, stilbenes, iridoid glycosides, fatty acids, and fibers. However, polyphenols possess low solubility, stability, and bioavailability, thus the encapsulation of the mentioned active principles in different carriers is necessary. Liposomes are widely used as a carrier for the encapsulation, preservation, and controlled release of polyphenols in various products. Therefore, the aims of the presented research are the development and characterization of V. myrillus leaf extract-loaded liposomes via the determination of encapsulation efficiency, particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, and mobility.

AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modifiedplant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained fromwaste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the producedsilica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigatethe mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization ofcomposite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) andmeasurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles withvinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and loadfor comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms ofoptimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the adsorption of As(V), phosphate, and textile dye Acid Green 25 (AG-25) on layered double hydroxides Mn-Fe_LDH and corresponding membranes (wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH). The wCell membrane, derived from waste tobacco boxes, was formed by cross-linking of epoxy and amino modified cellulose fibers with epoxy modified Mn-Fe_LDH and lysine as cross-linker. Structural and morphological analyses were conducted for Mn-Fe_LDH and wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH. The batch system explored pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration effects on wCell/Mn-Fe_LDH adsorption efficiency. Adsorption capacities of 82.71, 106.9, and 130.3 mg g−1 were achieved for As(V), phosphate, and AG-25, respectively, indicating effective anionic species removal. Kinetic analysis suggested intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters and ionic strength effects indicated a physisorption mechanism for AG-25 and surface complexation for As(V) and phosphate. Biodegradation experiments after five adsorption/desorption cycles revealed the membrane’s decomposition, with phosphate’s strong bonding releasing essential elements valuable for soil fertilization. Effluent wastewater treatment demonstrated low environmental impact through the formation of insoluble As(V) salts and photocatalytic dye degradation.

AB - The increase in waste polymer recycling has helped in promoting sustainability, and together with the use of renewable raw materials, it has become a widespread concept with positive effects on both the economy and ecology. Accordingly, the aim of this study was the synthesis of “green” plasticizers, marked as LA/PG/PET/EG/LA, formed from waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and bio-based platform chemicals propylene glycol (PG) and levulinic acid (LA). The structure of the obtained plasticizers was complex, as confirmed by results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The LA/PG/PET/EG/LA plasticizers and waste poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were used in an optimized technology for PVC re-granulate production. The hardness of the PVC-based material with “green” plasticizers, in comparison to commercial plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), increased by 11.3%, while migration decreased. An improved material homogeneity and wettability of the fibers by the matrix were observed using SEM analysis of the material’s fracture surface, with a higher efficiency of intermolecular interactions leading to better mechanical performances of the newly designed materials. Thus, LA/PG/PET/EG/LA are unique materials with good compounding and plasticizing potential for PVC, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). In that manner, the use of bio-renewable resources and recycled polymers will contribute to diminishing waste polymer generation, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

AB - The presented study aimed to optimize polyphenol extraction from Satureja montana L. obtained from the experimental field of the Institute for Medicinal Plants Research ”Dr Josif Pančić”, Serbia, by varying the most important parameters for maceration, solid-to-solvent ratio, and extraction time. The obtained extracts were characterized regarding the total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant potential, extraction yield, conductivity, density, surface tension, and viscosity. The TPC and TFC were ~7 to 92 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g and 3.7 to 10.9 mg CE (catechin equivalent)/g, respectively. The highest extraction yield (86 %) as well as the highest antioxidant activities were obtained for the extracts prepared using a solid-to-solvent ratio of 1 g:50 cm3. On the other hand, the extraction time did not have a significant influence. The highest conductivity was measured in the extract prepared at a 1 g:10 cm3 ratio, while the highest density and surface tension were in the extract prepared at a 1 g:40 cm3 ratio (941 kg m-3 and 29.0 mN m-1, respectively). The highest viscosity was measured in the extract prepared at a 1 g: 20 cm3 ratio (2.89 mPa∙s). Our study shows the possibilities for the production of polyphenol-rich extract of S. montana which might be used in pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic products.

AB - Phenotypic screening of α-substituted thiocarbohydrazones revealed promising activity of 1,5-bis(salicylidene)thiocarbohydrazide against leukemia and breast cancer cells. Supplementary cell-based studies indicated an impairment of DNA replication via the ROS-independent pathway. The structural similarity of α-substituted thiocarbohydrazone to previously published thiosemicarbazone catalytic inhibitors targeting the ATP-binding site of human DNA topoisomerase IIα prompted us to investigate the inhibition activity on this target. Thiocarbohydrazone acted as a catalytic inhibitor and did not intercalate the DNA molecule, which validated their engagement with this cancer target. A comprehensive computational assessment of molecular recognition for a selected thiosemicarbazone and thiocarbohydrazone provided useful information for further optimization of this discovered lead compound for chemotherapeutic anticancer drug discovery.

AB - Styrene-butadiene (SBR) and acrylonitrile-butadiene (NBR) rubber blends with tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) and tetramethyl thiuram monosulfide (TMTS) accelerators and environmentally friendly plasticizers, obtained from PET recycling and biobased resources (LA/PG/PET/EG/LA), were prepared. The mechanical properties of the obtained rubber products were tested and compared with those of commercial dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP). TMTS was prepared by simple and efficient one-pot synthesis from dimethylamine, carbon disulfide, potassium cyanide, and ammonium chloride as catalysts in recycled isopropanol/water azeotrope as solvent. In a comparative study, methoxide, ethoxide, iodide, and amide ions were also used. The two-step reaction mechanism of TMTS synthesis involves the oxidation of the amine salt of dimethyldithiocarbamic acid to TMTD by hydrogen peroxide and sulfur elimination from the TMTD disulfide bond. Potassium cyanide appears to be the most efficient nucleophile. The simplicity of operation, mild reaction conditions, solvent recycling, high yields, and applicability to the industrial level are the advantages of this process. Shore hardness, tensile strength, and compression test results of vulcanized blends before and after aging showed similar properties for both accelerators, while somewhat better results were obtained with LA/PG/PET/EG/LA plasticizer.

AB - In the proposed study, agro-waste biomass oat straw (OS) was considered a potential adsorbent for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Se(IV) removal from aqueous solutions. In order to obtain material with better adsorption abilities, the OS was modified by a deep eutectic solvent (DES). Structural changes caused by the applied modification route were considered by pHpzc, SEM, FTIR, and DSC/TG analysis. These methods discovered that lignocellulosic biomass degradation and material functionalization were achieved by DES treatment. Preliminary adsorption tests showed an over fourfold increase in capacity upon modification. The kinetic parameters implied that adsorption on modified material followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Different isotherm models were applied to experimental data, while the Sips isotherm model best describes the equilibrium of the adsorption process on the tested modified material. According to this isotherm model, the maximum achieved adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Zn(II), and Se(IV) were 48.21, 55.06, and 87.85 mg/g, respectively. The summarized experimental results revealed that the adsorption process of selected cations on modified OS was predominantly caused by chemisorption, while, in addition to chemisorption, electrostatic forces were also responsible for Se(IV) removal. Desorption test showed that the prepared material could be reused for at least 3 cycles, with minimal efficiency loss. Briefly, this study reinforces that DES-modified agro-waste biomass could be used as a promising adsorbent for cations and oxyanions from wastewater.

Briefly, this study reinforces that DES-modified agro-waste biomass could be used as a promising adsorbent for cations and oxyanions from wastewater.",

cross-linking with citric acid. The adsorption/desorption study of Pb2+, methylene blue (MB), and crystal
violet (CV) removal, was performed. Adsorption data fitting, obtained using the Langmuir model, gave
116 mg g 1 (Pb2+), 179 mg g 1 (MB) and 482 mg g 1 (CV) at 25 ℃ for TOCell linters, while 101 mg g 1

to photocatalytic degradation while lead was transformed into stable lead phthalate (LP), and further
used as filler in composites based on unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). UPR was synthesized from
waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Structural characterization was performed using FTIR, SEM,
and NMR methods. Composites loaded with acryloyl modified kraft lignin (A-KfL) and/or LP was tested
for tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and fire resistance (UL-94 V method). The best mechanical
and fireproofing properties were obtained at 15 wt.% A-KfL and 40 wt.% Al(OH)3 addition. The results
of the toxicity leaching test (TCLP) confirmed the environmentally safe stabilization of desorbed pollutant
in the UPR matrix. Application of environmentally friendly membranes, susceptible to easy biodegradation, had low negative effects to the environment.

AB - In the study, the optimization of the extraction from Aloe vera leaf waste was performed via varying solid-to-solvent ratio, solvent type, extraction time, and technique (maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions—HAE, UAE, and MAE, respectively). The optimal extraction conditions for achieving the highest polyphenol content are a 1:30 ratio, 70% ethanol, and 30 min of HAE. Total flavonoid and protein contents were significantly higher in the extract from MAE, while total condensed tannin content was the highest in HAE. LC-MS analysis quantified 13 anthraquinone and chromone compounds. The variations in the FT-IR spectra of the extracts obtained by different extraction procedures are minor. The influence of extraction conditions on the antioxidant ability of the extracts depended on applied antioxidant assays. The extracts possessed medium inhibition properties against Staphylococcus aureus and weak inhibitory activity against Enterococcus feacalis. The extracts had stimulative effect on HaCaT cell viability. Regarding the extraction yield, there was a significant difference between the used extraction techniques (MAE > HAE > maceration and UAE). The presented study is an initial step in the production of polyphenol-rich extracts from A. vera leaf waste aimed to be used for the potential preparation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations for the skin.

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix. Highlights: MnAl-LDH-PMMA composites improved modulus, strength, hardness Loss of toughness is tolerable for 3 wt% reinforcement Viscoelastic properties are improved for composites compared to matrix.

AB - This study focuses on establishing an efficient two-step technology, which includes: (1) consecutive adsorption-desorption, using cellulose-based membranes, bCells, and (2) photocatalytic degradation of the fungicide thiophanate-methyl (TPM), using synthesized Ag-P25 and Ce-P25 catalysts. The catalysts, obtained by controlled deposition of Ag2O/Ag and CeO2 onto P25 TiO2 carrier (Degussa), were characterized using ATR-FTIR, XRPD, BET, FESEM, HRTEM, HAADF-EDS and UV–DRS techniques. In order to establish a feasible purification technology, preconcentration of TPM was performed by adsorption, achieving 75.5 and 92.9 mg/g of TPM removal using bCell-EpL and bCell–EpL–TA membranes, respectively, followed by efficient desorption (> 95%) that provided acceptable TPM concentration for photodegradation experiments. Under optimal conditions (0.07 g/L of both catalysts), complete degradation of TPM (5 mg/L) occurred within 2 h, compared to 4 h for the base TiO2 P25. Measurements of quantum yield and the results of HPLC-MS analysis, alongside DFT calculation, assisted in understanding the TPM degradation pathways. New degradation products were detected and proposed from HPLC–MS analysis. Embryotoxic assays, performed on zebrafish (Danio rerio), applied to estimate the toxicity evolution of time-dependent generated TPM degradation products, showed low embryotoxic potential. Chemical oxygen demand (26 mg O2/L) confirmed low ecotoxicological pressure of effluent water.

AB - This paper presents sustainable technology for environmentally friendly composite production. Biobased unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR), synthesized from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycosylate and renewable origin maleic anhydride (MAnh) and propylene glycol(PG), was reinforced with unmodified and vinyl-modified biosilica nanoparticles obtained fromrice husk. The structural and morphological properties of the obtained particles, b-UPR, as well ascomposites, were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magneticresonance spectroscopy (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) techniques. The study of the influence of biosilica modification on the mechanicalproperties of composites was supported by hardness modeling. Improvement of the tensile strengthof the b-UPR-based composite at 2.5 wt.% addition of biosilica modified with vinyl silane, named“b-UPR/SiO2-V” composite, has been achieved with 88% increase. The thermal aging process appliedto the b-UPR/SiO2-V composite, which simulates use over the product’s lifetime, leads to the deterioration of composites that were used as fillers in commercial unsaturated polyester resin (c-UPR).The grinded artificially aged b-UPR composites were used as filler in c-UPR for the production of atable top layer with outstanding mechanical properties, i.e., impact resistance and microhardness, aswell as fire resistance rated in the V-0 category according to the UL-94 test. Developing sustainablecomposites that are chemically synthesized from renewable sources is important from the aspect ofpreserving the environment and existing resources as well as the extending their life cycle.

AB - Flavonoids are a big class of plants’ secondary metabolites which possess antimicrobial, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, etc. activities. However, their wider application is limited due to their poor solubility and stability in different environments. In order to overcome this problem and improve their biological and physicochemical characteristics, enzymatic oligomerization of flavonoids can be performed by using laccases as biocatalyst. In this study, laccase from Trametes versicolor was successfully immobilized onto two nanocarriers and used as a catalyst for the oligomerization of two flavonoids, esculin and phloridzin. For immobilization, nanocelulose prepared by ultrasonic treatment of commercial microcellulose and nanosilica from rice were used. Both carriers were modified in order to introduce amino groups on their surface: nanocelulose with poly(ethyleneimine) (NC-PEI) and nanosilica with organosylane (NS-OS). Most active preparation for NC-PEIlaccase and NS-OS-laccase showed activities of 10.05 IU/g of support and 9.08 IU/g of support, respectively. The oligomerization of flavonoids was performed using immobilized laccase and obtained results were compared with those obtained with free laccase (same amount of activity units) as biocatalyst. Immobilized preparations showed promising activities in reaction of esculin oligomerization, since after 24h of reaction the conversions of 73.3% and 61.6% with NC-PEI-laccase and NS-OS-laccase, respectively was achieved, while the soluble enzyme gave the conversion of 92.4%. On the other hand, some lower activity of NC-PEI-laccase was observed in reaction of phloridzin oligomerization, since the achieved conversion was 43.3% compared to 80.7% of phloridzin conversion obtained with soluble laccase. The lower activity could be explained by different reaction medium, since, compared to the esculin oligomerization, the phloridzin oligomerization was performed in 30% methanol, due to its low water solubility. However, obtained results indicate that novel immobilized laccase preparations can be successfully applied in the production of various flavonoid oligomers.

AB - The hybrid multifunctional magnetic organic/inorganic composite materials, with addition of optimal filler type and quantities are attractive due to wide range of potential application, from various pressure sensors, through smart packaging, to tissue engineering and medicine. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of polyvinylidene fluoride/nanocellulose/magnetite@BaTiO3 hybrid films were investigated. The presented study revealed significant impact of nanocellulose (NC) content on formation of the polymorphs of PVDF, responsible for ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectric properties. The structural characterization, XRD and Raman measurements confirmed enhancement of the β and γ phases when the loading of NC higher then 4 wt% in multi-component hybrid films. The saturation magnetization value gradually raises with increasing amount of NC and reaches its maximum value of 41.2 emu/g at content of 4 wt% NC. Further, addition of NC decreases saturation magnetization value regardless of constant amount of magnetite, indicating optimal content of NC substrate for co-precipitation of Fe3O4 onto NC matrix.

AB - The morphological properties and adsorption potential of lignin-based porous
microspheres (LgMS) for heavy metals ions were investigated. LgMS were produced via
suspension copolymerization of unmodified or acryloyl modified kraft lignin with amine
(polyethylene imine - PEI) or acrylate (trimethylolpropanetriacrylate - TMPTA) functional
polymers. Structural and morphological characterization of LgMS was performed using
FTIR, BET, and SEM techniques. Copolymerization of the unmodified lignin and PEI, using
epoxy chloropropane cross-linker, provided highly porous LgMS, with 800 ± 80 μm
diameter, 7.68 m2g−1 surface area and 7.7 mmol g−1 of terminal amino groups. The LgMS
produced by copolymerization of the acryloyl functionalized lignin and TMPTA provided a
decrease in LgMS diameter (253 ± 42 μm), while surface area and porosity increase, 69.4 m2
g-1and 59%, respectively. The effect of acryloyl functionalization of kraft lignin on the
LgMS adsorption capacity for Ni2+ ions was also studied in a comparative study. The results
showed that final adsorption performances of LgMS were affected by the key factors
including lignin functionality and the LgMS synthesis condition. Lower adsorption capacity
of 22.6 mg g-1 for Ni2+ was observed for acryloyl LgMS due to lower affinity for formation
electrostatic interactions of Ni2+ ions with phenol/hydroxyl groups responsible for
adsorption. Opposite was found for amino LgMS where 49.4 mg g-1was achieved. However,
this study indicated that removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater can be realized
through the application of eco-friendly lignin-based porous microspheres.

AB - Conventional wastewater treatment processes are increasingly difficult to fulfill strict standards of
achieving the required quality. Therefore, it is necessary to apply processes that in an efficient and
economically justified way reach the necessary limits in order to discharge wastewater into the
recipient. The process of photolysis represents the degradation of the starting pollutant practically to
water and carbon dioxide. The whole process takes place under the action of a UV lamp that imitated
solar irradiation. The process is environmentally justified since, unlike some other advanced
oxidation processes - AOPs, there is no use of additional, hazardous, chemicals which possibly results
in the precipitates formation that are leading to further treatment. In this paper, photolytic degradation
of pesticide thiophanate methyl was performed in doubled wall quartz reactor equipped with a
thermoregulation system. Reaction was forced under Osram ULTRA VITALUX UV lamp (300W).
Kinetics of photodecomposition process was followed by pseudo-first order. In certain time periods,
specimens were sampled, filtered and monitored by UV spectrophotometer Shimadzu 1800 with an
aim to determine the concentration of xenobiotic. Complete degradation of present xenobiotics was
obtained after 240 min. With an aim to enhance the degradation process, hydrogen peroxide was
added as a boosting agent which cause a shortening in demanded time (150 min) for complete
degradation. Verification of the success of decomposition was confirmed by the obtained values of
chemical oxygen demand (COD), which reveal that the established system has a basis for real
application in industrial or municipal wastewater.

The applied procedure provided LMS-DEGDMA microspheres in the size range of 50-90 μm with specific surface area of 39 m2/g, porosity ϵp 62, pore diameters of 4-20 nm and total pore volume of 0.14 cm3/g. Immobilization of laccase from Myceliophthora thermophilia expressed in Aspergillus oryzae (Novozyme® 51003) on LMS-DEGDMA was explored. By optimization of the immobilization process, it was demonstrated that laccase immobilization on LMS-DEGDMA exhibited the best results (protein immobilization yield of 70 %, activity yield of 27 %, and catalytic activity of 262 IU/g of support) when the immobilization was carried out at pH 5.0 and 100 mg of offered protein per g support during 1 h. Additionally, the LMS-DEGDMA-laccase preparation showed efficiency (>80 %, 5-7 cycles) in decolorization of anthraquinone dyes (Lanaset® violet B, Lanaset® blue 2 R and C.I. Acid Green 40) and their mixture. In case of Lanaset® violet B, LMS-DEGDMA improved laccase's kinetics characteristics (90 % over 24 h) along with operational stability (> 63 % catalytic activity, 7 cycles).

AB - Multifunctional lignin bio-based adsorbent, b-LMS, was obtained via inverse copolymerization in the suspension of acryloyl modified kraft lignin (KfL-AA) and bio-based trimethylolpropane triacrylate (bio-TMPTA). Morphological and structural characterization of KfL-AA and b-LMS was performed using BET, FTIR, Raman, NMR, TGA, SEM, and XPS techniques. The b-LMS microspheres with 253 ± 42 μm diameters, 69.4 m2 g−1 surface area, and 59% porosity efficiently adsorb Malachite Green (MG), Tartrazine (T), and Methyl Red (MR) dye. The influence of pH, pollutant concentration, temperature, and time on the removal efficiency was studied in a batch mode. Favorable and spontaneous processes with high adsorption capacities e.g. 116.8 mg g−1 for MG, 86.8 mg g−1 for T, and 68.6 mg g−1 for MR indicate the significant adsorptive potential of b-LMS. Results from diffusional and single mass transfer resistance studies indicate that pore diffusion is a rate-limiting step. Theoretical calculations confirmed a higher affinity of b-LMS to cationic dye MG compared with an anionic and neutral one, i.e. T and MR, respectively. The data fitting from a flow system, using semi-empirical equations and Pore Surface Diffusion Modelling (PSDM) provided breakthrough point determination. The results from the desorption and competitive adsorption study proved the exceptional performance of b-LMS. Moreover, sulfation of b-LMS, i.e.production of b-LMS-OSO3H, introduced high-affinity sulfate groups with respect to cationic dye and cations. Developed methodology implements the principle of sustainable development and offers concept whose results contribute to the minimization of environmental pollution.

AB - The aim of this paper is to study the self-healing capability of fractured Al joints bonded with novel eco-epoxide adhesives synthesized from a bio-renewable raw material (tannic acid – TA). Two synthesized eco-epoxy components based on TA, (A) glycidyl ether and (B) glycidyl phosphate ester of TA, were used as a replacement for the toxic epoxy component based on Bisphenol A. The effect of the eco-epoxy components on the self-healing capability was measured as a recovery of shear strength in a single lap joint (SLJ) test after complete failure, which was compared to the reference epoxy (R). The self-healing procedure was performed in an autoclave at 180 °C for 2 h and 2 bars. A combination of two monitoring techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Acoustic Emission (AE), was used to monitor the strain distribution and damage propagation in the SLJ. The measured shear stress of A and B adhesives in the SLJ had values in the range of 2.3–5.1 MPa. A fracture analysis showed complete adhesive failure for all the tested adhesives, which was not affected by the self-healing process. Out of all adhesives, only the A adhesive demonstrated the capability to heal. The recovery of the shear strength for adhesive A was higher than 50% of the virgin case. In addition, the AE analysis managed to capture a clear distinction between the signals for the virgin and the self-healed tests for adhesive A. Results obtained in this study highlighted the promising potential of using bio-based epoxy adhesives in structural adhesive bonding with the possibility of using self-healing in the recovery of the strength of such bonded joints.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate the self-healing potential of damaged Al joints when bonded using novel eco-epoxide adhesives derived from tannic acid (TA). Two eco-epoxy components based on TA, (A) glycidyl ether and (B) glycidyl phosphate ester of TA, were produced. The effect of the eco-epoxy components on the self-healing ability was assessed in terms of the energy dissipation recovery after partial failure in a double cantilever beam (DCB) test, which was compared to the reference epoxy (R). The self-healing process required 2 h and 2 bars in an autoclave at 180 °C. Techniques such as DSC, FTIR and DMA showed residual activity and potential self-healing capability of the used adhesives. A combination of two monitoring techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Acoustic Emission (AE), was used to monitor the strain distribution and damage propagation in the DCB specimens. The healing index for adhesives R, B and A was found to be 8.9%, 3.0%, and 82.5% respectively. The findings of this work highlighted the potential of using bio-based epoxy adhesives in structural adhesive bonding, as well as the prospect of utilizing their self-healing ability to restore the strength of such bonded parts.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate a possibility of synthesis of porous ceramics with controlled open porosity, which could be used as sorbents and catalyst supports. Two organic additives were used to obtain open porosity: polystyrene beads and cellulose fibers, which are mixed with kaolin clay powder and the appropriate water content. Samples were sintered at 1050 oC for 1 h. Characterization of the obtained products included X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental CHNS analysis. In addition, porosity was examined by quantification of visual information. The specific surface areas were determined by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. Also, density and compressive strength of the obtained samples were assessed. It was determined that by sintering, the organic component completely leaves the system. For samples prepared with polystyrene beads and with cellulose fibers, satisfactory mechanical properties were obtained: compressive strengths were 1.42 and 1.56 MPa, respectively. It was noted that significantly higher open porosity was obtained by using polystyrene beads as a sacrificial template (porosity of ~56 %) instead of cellulose fibers (porosity of ~6 %).
