AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modifiedplant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained fromwaste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the producedsilica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigatethe mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization ofcomposite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) andmeasurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles withvinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and loadfor comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms ofoptimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix. Highlights: MnAl-LDH-PMMA composites improved modulus, strength, hardness Loss of toughness is tolerable for 3 wt% reinforcement Viscoelastic properties are improved for composites compared to matrix.

AB - This study presents the impact properties of the new form of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The Kolon fabrics were impregnated with the 10 wt% poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution with the addition of silica (SiO2) particles originating from rice husk or layered double hydroxide modified silica particles (FeAl-LDH@SiO2) as reinforcement. All the composites consisted of one layer of the impregnated fabric where the silica particles concentrations were 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% regarding PVB. The impact properties of the composite samples were analyzed by the controlled energy puncture impact tester. The structures of the composite samples were determined by the attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed that the Kolon/PVB/1 wt% FeAl-LDH@SiO2 sample yielded the maximum impact force.

AB - Rice husk was used to produce silica particles, which were then used to reinforce the polymer matrix. The synthesized SiO2 particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. In a PMMA matrix, prepared SiO2 particles in amounts of 1, 3, and 5 wt.% were used as reinforcing agents. The goal of this research was to see if SiO2 particles had any effect on the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Vickers microindentation hardness and impact testing were used to determine the mechanical properties of the obtained composites. The indentation creep’s behavior of a polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) composite material with varying amounts of nanoparticles (SiO2) was investigated and analyzed.

AB - As a renewable resource, starch is considered to be fully biodegradable and nonpolluting to the environment but the hygroscopicity of starch is the main disadvantage for wider applicability in the production of a polymer-based material. Hydrophobically modified starch prepared using natural-based plasticizers/modifiers in a first step ([-]-diisopropyl D-tartrate [DiPT], ricinoleic acid [RA] and epoxidized soybean oil [ESO]), and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) in a second step contributed to better compatibility, and thus reinforcing of composites. Tailored processing conditions, structural/morphological properties, hydrophobicity, and water-resistance of the modified starch were established. In addition, the Charpy impact and tensile strength of composites, based on poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) and modified starches, were determined. Increased tensile strength and Young modulus of the composite using starch-modified with DiPT-MAPP, that is, 3 and 83%, respectively, indicated the possible applicability of obtained materials.

AB - Morphology and development of surface damage of alumina-based materials, resulting from cavitation erosion is studied in this paper. Two series of samples were prepared: samples without fibers and those with the addition of 2 wt % of ceramic fibers. The form of surface damage is considered to be the information carrier for the analysis of the resistance of materials to cavitation and the quality of this information is determined. The surface of the samples was monitored in defined time intervals in order to prepare the digitized image suitable for further analysis using image analysis software. The principal component analysis was applied to examine the appearance of certain morphological characteristics depending on the behavior of the material during cavitation erosion. It was concluded that the addition of ceramic fibers gained in importance after a long time of cavitation erosion, while during a starting period of time the difference in the morphology of the damage is not very observable.

AB - The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the structure of Mn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the adhesion behavior of composite adhesives on two Al alloys (L3005 and L8079). The composite adhesives were made out of the UV-curing Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BT) as polymer matrix and the addition of 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH as adhesion enhancers. Adhesion was evaluated by using the micro Vickers hardness testing procedure. The wetting angle of composite adhesives to the Al substrates was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter b obtained from the microhardness tests. The highest increase in adhesion was observed for BT with 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH on L3005 substrate, which was more than 15 times higher than the adhesion for the neat BT. The morphological segregation of composite adhesives after the contact with Al substrates was examined by optical microscopy and a higher compatibility of Mn-Al LDH particles with L3005 substrate was found. The methods used for the adhesion properties assessment suggested that the Mn-Al LDH was the best adhesion enhancer of the BT matrix for L3005 substrate containing a higher content of Mn and surface hydroxyl groups.

AB - Adsorption of anthraquinone dye Acid Blue 111 by alumina-iron oxide doped particles prepared by sol-gel method from aqueous solutions was studied. The adsorbent morphology was revealed by FESEM and the crystallographic phase is analyzed by the XRD technique. The effect of adsorbate and adsorbent concentrations, pH value, type of adsorbent and thermodynamic parameters on dye removal by adsorption was studied. The change of dye concentration during the adsorbtion was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The change of the adsorbent surface before and after dye removal was observed using the Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption kinetics is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process. The thermodynamic study of dye adsorption proves the process is spontaneous with exothermic nature.

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

AB - Composites based on poly(methyl methacrylate), dimethyl itaconate matrix and alumina particles were prepared. Ferrous oxide-doped alumina particles (Al2O3Fe) and commercial alumina nanoparticles (Al(2)O(3)n) modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (AM) and methyl esters of linseed oil fatty acids (biodiesel-BD) were used as reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the prepared composites, containing 1, 3 and 5 wt% of surface-modified alumina particles, are compared to a neat polymer matrix. The particles were characterized by single-beam Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The mechanical properties of the composites were determined by micro-Vickers hardness and impact testing. The morphology of the surface of the composites exposed to cavitation was observed through a field emission scanning electron microscope. AFM analysis was used to compare surface features seen using the SEM and to interpret the surface degradation properties. The hardness, cavitation resistance and high-impact energy resistance of the composites are better in the case of AM surface modification of alumina fillers, but biodiesel modified particles have comparable mechanical properties and a stabilized Al-O-Si bond that could be important when a composite is exposed to humidity or a wet environment.

The hardness, cavitation resistance and high-impact energy resistance of the composites are better in the case of AM surface modification of alumina fillers, but biodiesel modified particles have comparable mechanical properties and a stabilized Al-O-Si bond that could be important when a composite is exposed to humidity or a wet environment.",

AB - Basalt as a filler in a polymer-based composite material fulfils the demand of being natural, environment-friendly material for the production of various composite materials. The material could be used as protective layer and the abrasion should be tested in order to evaluate the properties of the material. The cavitation test enables the evaluation of the possible service in conditions that simulate the extensive erosion. The presence of basalt in the matrix improves the resistance to cavitation. The possibility to further improve the material could be obtained using the reinforcement of the matrix itself by incorporation of submicron ceramic particles into the composite. The obtained hybrid composite material with the addition of reinforcement in the matrix further improves the cavitation resistance.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) structure on the adhesion behaviour of composite films onto a metallic surface. The composite films consisted of UV cured bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. Composites were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt % of POSS. Adhesion was evaluated using the micro Vickers hardness testing method. The contact angle of composite films to a brass substrate was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter obtained from microhardness measurements. Optical microscopy indicated morphological segregation in the hybrid films suggesting the compatibility extent between the matrix and each particle. The shape and size of the indent were analyzed and correlated with adhesion quality. The methods used for the estimation of adhesion strength and quality clearly indicated that the highest adhesion enhancement of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix was POSS reagent containing both polar (hydroxyl) and nonpolar (unsaturated aliphatic - allyl) side groups.

AB - Composite materials based on acrylate UV-cured polymers (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as a matrix and reinforcements that can be selected in order to adjust the properties of the obtained composite are used in the field of dental technology. The role of reinforcement is to adjust the mechanical properties, but also to control the shrinkage during curing. As reinforcement, alumina particles doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) synthesized using the sol-gel technique were selected. In order to simulate the process of adhesive application in real conditions, in vitro testing technique and adhesion properties of synthesized adhesive were used, where tooth tissue was used as a substrate. Comparison with standard adhesives used in dentistry was used to compare adhesion. The quality of the adhesive joint was evaluated using the microhardness testing method using different loads where it is estimated how the adhesive makes a connection with the substrate. It was shown that the synthesized adhesive showed significantly enhanced adhesion compared to the standard adhesive used in dentistry (836%).

AB - Commercial gamma - Al2O3 particles, Al2O3 n, and synthesized Al2O3 doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) were used as reinforcements to enhance the toughness of an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). Alumina modification with vinyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-VT, and methacryloyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-ME functionalities contributed to the increase in the extent of covalent binding at the UPR/filler interface. Tensile tests showed a slight improvement in the toughness of UPR/Al2O3 Fe composite and a significant improvement for the UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT composite at a 1.0 wt.% particle loading. An enhancement in the micro Vickers hardness for UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT and improved DMA properties were also evidenced.

AB - The adsorption performance of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) alumina doped with iron oxide, and subsequently modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, was used for enhanced Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ removal. The phase composition and the structural and surface/textural properties of the obtained adsorbents were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetry, Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area of the samples and point of zero charge determination. Adsorption of selected cations was examined in the batch conditions using different contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperatures. Different models of the adsorption isotherms were used for determination of the adsorption capacities, in which the best fit of Freundlich and Langmuir model was obtained for FeAl2O3, that is, Freundlich model for FeAl(2)O(3)APTES. A significant increase of adsorption capacities: from 44.21 to 51.66 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, 25.69 to 32.96 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 19.48 to 24.64 mg g(-1) for Ni2+ was obtained for FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, respectively, which indicated the significance of the macroporous structure of 3DOM alumina and subsequent amino-terminal modification. The values of the correlation coefficient (R-2) suggested that pseudo-second kinetic model best describes Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption on FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, and Cd2+ and Ni2+ onto FeAl2O3, while second kinetic model gave the highest correlation coefficients for Pb2+ adsorption on FeAl2O3.

AB - The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the polyhedral oligo silsesquioxanes (POSS) structure on cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films. Cavitation is used as a method for estimation of adhesion quality of a composite film on a metal substrate. The hybrid composite films consist of UV cured Bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BisGMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. POSS structure is established in dependence of content of hydroxyl groups and cross-linkable functionalities that affect the system compatibility. Composites are made with 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of three different types of POSS reagents containing: i) hydroxyl groups (POSS-M), ii) both hydroxyl and allyl groups (POSS-M-A), and iii) methacrylate groups (POSS-M-Cl). Morphology of composite films is examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The roughness after cavitation erosion of hybrid films with POSS-M-A determined by AFM was decreased for ~86% when compared to the polymer matrix. The loss of mass after cavitation erosion is significantly reduced by the addition of 5 wt. % of POSS particles. The best resistance to cavitation evaluated as the mass loss has a composite film with POSS-M-A particles and it exhibits ~94% lower mass loss when compared to the neat polymer matrix. Likewise, hybrid composite films with POSS-M-Cl and POSS-M particles decreased mass loss after cavitation test by
~91% and ~89%, respectively. The results indicate that improved mechanical properties and enhanced adhesion to the metal substrate contributed to improved resistance to cavitation erosion. Methods used in this study for estimation of adhesion quality and wear resistance clearly indicate that the best compatibility with BisGMA/TEGDMA matrix is achieved with POSS reagent containing both hydroxyl and allyl functional group.

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the infuence of chemically modifed native starch on the
mechanical properties of composite materials. The starch (S) was modifed by diisopropyl D-tartarate (DIPT), ricinoleic acid (RA) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) in the frst step, S/(DIPT/RK/ESU), and by polypropylene functionalized with maleic anhydride (MAPP) in the second step, S/(DIPT/RK/ESU)/MAPP.
The ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) was used as the polymer matrix of composites. The
composites were made with 30 wt.% of all obtained modifed starches as fllers. The chemical structure was examined by a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A morphology of starch particles and composites was examined by feld emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Tensile strength, the toughness of the composite materials (Charpy method) and biodegradability were investigated.
Modulus of elasticity of composites was increased by the addition of modifed starch up to 89% for
S/RK/MAPP/EAA which also exhibited the highest Charpy impact strength. Thermal stability of
composites was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and diferential scanning calorimetry
analysis (DSC). The composite with starch modifed by the two-step process, S/(DIPT/RK/ESO)/MAPP was the most difcult to undergo biodegradation than composites with S/(DIPT/RK/ESO).

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the in uence of the polyhedral oligo silsesquioxanes (POSS)
structure obtained by facile synthesis on the improvement in mechanical properties of acrylate composite
lms. The composite lms consist of UV cured Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol
dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as reinforcement. Introduced
functionalities considering hydroxyl, both hydroxyl and allyl, and methacrylate groups in POSS-M,
POSS-M-A and POSS-M-Cl, respectively, enabled optimization of system compatibility. Composites
were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt. % of POSS particles. A morphology of hybrid composites was examined
by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cross-linking density (3), storage modulus (G'), damping
factor (tanδ) and Tg of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA).
A higher amount of methacrylate groups contributed to the increased cross-linking points and thus to
increased storage modulus for composites with POSS-M-Cl. Micro Vickers hardness (HV) of hybrid
composites showed incompatibility of POSS-M particles with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix that led to
a decrease of composite hardness when compared to neat polymer matrix. The highest hardness
improvement was obtained by the addition of POSS-M-A reinforcement (increase by 50%). Brazilian
test was used to estimate the elastic modulus by the indirect test method and it indicated a decrease
in mechanical properties with the POSS addition higher than 1 wt.%. Methods used in this paper for
estimation of reinforcing e ect clearly indicate that the incompletely condensed POSS-M-A exhibit the optimal performance of composites based on Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix due to the presence of both
hydroxyl and allyl functional group.

AB - Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are two incompatible polymers. Compatibilization of EVA/PMMA polymer blends with EVA-g-PMMA decreased the pore diameter and improved the mechanical properties. Image analysis of SEM micrographs enabled statistical analysis of the porosity parameters, including data about their positions. Positioning of the pores on the image was achieved by implementation of Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulation by Python libraries. Hausdorff dimension (DHf) analysis showed improved complexity of the material network obtained by compatibilization. The coordinates of pore contours were processed by the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm (RDP) to establish the models by the finite element method (FEM). This process is iterative and enables a parametric study of the problem so that the type of pore geometry responsible for the observed mechanical behavior could be revealed. The FEM revealed the regions of the material that bear the load and enabled the extraction of parts of the material that diminish the porosity but do not participate in load carrying. A parametric study showed a decrease of 22% in the maximal shear stress when the porosity increased 10%, suggesting the importance of bulging of the material that played the role in decreasing the porosity of non-bearing material. A procedure for selecting the model with a regular pore shape and distribution based on the actual (irregular) porous microstructure is proposed.
